Which worktop for a utility room?

We are altering our downstairs loo to include storage and a butlers sink so it will be a loo/utility.
I have no idea what sort of worksurface to use around the sink.

As the room will be used by visitors I'd like it to look decent, which rules out cheap laminates etc (which is what we had in our last utility room), but I have a feeling wood is not the best choice and granite etc is probably a bit pricey, though we wouldnt need much.

Any suggestions?
What do you have which is practical but looks good too?

TIA

I have a laminate in my utility but was going to suggest a granite overlay. Rather than being solid granite it its a thin piece shaped like a shoe box lid and put on top of a wooden/cheaper base worktop.

I think wood would look the nicest with a butlers sink - but if you intend to use the utility sink for the dirty/messy jobs I don't think it is the most practical.

tell me more about how laminates don't look decent.

I agree wood would look good but prob not the easiest to keep looking nice.

PigletJOhn can you suggest some nice laminates?
SOmething which looks real woudl be good, am sure they have moved on since our last house but am not too well up on all the options.

I like the surfaces to be the same as in the kitchen, so it all looks a bit, well, coordinated.

If you are not looking for a huge piece of granite you might be able to get some left over pieces quite reasonably.

I was advised to sell some of our old granite worktops on ebay of all places.

I would agree normally virgo but the loo is off the hall so quite separate from the kitchen.
But I will look on ebay and also reclaim yards to see if I can find some granite or slate to recycle.
