Loft conversion - centre stairs

MrsAFlowerpot · 09/05/2012 22:11

We are looking at a valid conversion to just turn the loft in to an extra bedroom with windows. We'll obviously get companies in to draw up plans for regs/planning etc., but before going down this road just wondered if anyone out there has a conversion with existing stairs in the middle of the house? If so, how did it work?

TIA!

My friends done a conversion with stairs going up against the inner wall of a semi, is that what you mean? Works fine, as long as you have good lighting on the stairwell.

If you mean that the stairs would come up in the middle of the attic, that only works if your attic is large enough to get a decent space for the bedroom

Check with building regs as they do want completely fire proofed exits. We have stairs going to front door, all doors have to be fire doors etc. So not sure how you would get round stairs in the middle of house, unless you have a fire door at the top or bottom?

Sorry forgot to add, this is if you want it signed off as another bedroom

We have been househunting forever a while, viewed a lot of houses now, and I really hate having the stairs coming up in the middle of the attic room- so useless, wastes so much useable space, and creates issues with making the stairs properly safe.

If it's at all possible, I recommend coming up at the side of the room so that you get the most possible useable space.

Sorry, I was very unclear Blush our current stairs are in the middle of the house, rather than planned stairs to the loft.

Depends how wide the house is. Our stairs currently come up the middle but we are looking at a conversion with 1 room either side.
How big is your loft?

If you have like me the stairs in the middle of the house, to get the stairs up to the loft you will have to lose some room off of one of your bedrooms,

We have a traditional 3 bed semi - so stairs (ground floor - 1st floor) are along the outside wall of the house but then turn at the top (90 degrees) so the top of the stairs is in the middle of the landing (if you see what I mean).

I don't think it matters too much where your stairs are now, depending on whether you have the head height in the loft to position the stairs to the loft wherever you want.

If you can imagine in our case, the highest part of the house is the inner wall (i.e. where it adjoins the next door semi) and we don't have great head height anywhere else. I think (from having a couple of builders round) the head height needs to be between 2.1-2.3m. We therefore have to have the stairs going through the centre of the house (i.e. in between the front and back bedrooms and in that case, you'd lose the best / highest part of the loft room to the stairs, compromising the practicality of it) or would need a side dormer for the stairs to the loft to go over the existing stairs (with 2 90 degree turns).

Is that what you meant?

Looking to do a loft conversion on a two up two down terraced house. A possible problem is that the staircase is in the middle of the house. Has anyone tackled this problem themselves, and how did the solve it ?
