HELP! My sewing machine started smoking!

I have (quite an old) Husqvarna Model 32 60 sewing machine, and I was sewing a duvet cover for my son when suddenly the machine started to smoke!
It smells DISGUSTING too.
I've turned it off and will leave it to cool off before trying to see if it still works. I haven't got big hopes though.
Has anybody got similar experiences with sewing machines? Have I put too much oil on, or is it just knackered?

Thanks

Sounds like something electrical has burnt out. DON'T switch it on again. Unplug it and take it to a shop where they can repair that type of machine.

Is it old enough to smoke?

PigletJohn · 06/05/2012 16:17

if it is quite old, did it seem to you that the smoke was coming from the motor, rather than the foot pedal?

I don't know about these things, but it seems to me that sewing machines are a lot less expensive now than they used to be, so you'd better ask in advance what a repair charge would be. There are also quite a lot on fleabay and freecycle from people whose enthuisiasm waned.

I have a Husqvarna that did the same and the motor started running spontaneously. I unplugged and took the base plate off and found a spider had shorted it out. Put it back together minus arachnid corpse and it works fine

Thanks all. I thought I'd just update you.
I used it again a few hours later, and it still didn't smell good. DH told me that the smell was definitely electrical.
I went and bought a new machine from Tesco. (Bargain!) DH then sat down to look at the Husqvarna and opened up the motor to find a LOT of dust trapped in there. With this fixed, the old trusted Husqvarna now works again!
It is sure to last a lot longer than the cheapie from Tesco, but now I have two...
Thanks again for your advice.
