Paint for wooden fence?

If the rain stops (!) we are painting a fence this weekend.
What paint do you recommend.
Most of old paint has been scrapped away.
Can we still prime it?
Should we prime it?

I just used Cuprinol Garden Shades, went over weathered brown stain with cream and it was great.

Wickes stuff is good - nice and thick with good coverage

do you really mean paint?

fences are usually treated with a water-repellent stain, available in various shades of brown and some more surpising colours.

Actual paint would not last long due to severe weather exposure

ditto for cuprinol.... you do need a couple of coats for it to lookk really good though

What kind of wood is it? Is it a posh fence, such as you might have at the front, or the rough wooden panel for down the side? The first might well need a primer, but second can be done with fence paint/stain. We did our rough panels a really deep charcoal, which shows off the green of the planting very well. Yes, you do need two coats.

I should say I'm in Australia, so naming the brands won't help.

if you use a water-based stain (as is usual for fences) and it rains overnight, or even the next day if it hasn't been dry and sunny, all the stain will wash off.

I know, I've done it.

We're just having a shed built and it's being painted in the cuprinol garden shades in warm flax, there are a few nice colours on the website.

God, I've just checked out the cuprinol site. Lovely colours. In Australia there are about 6 shades for this kind of paint. Oz is shit for paint. I admit it.
