We had a lovely white Victorian wood and wrought iron gate stolen. We need to have a replacement made, and have been advised to go for oiled wood and black painted wrought iron. Any views? The house has a balcony with white painted railings; I don't want to change these.

Who has advised you?

The only reason I can think for this is that it will require less upkeep. If you prefer to have it painted white though - then do Smile

Equally I don't think the fact that the railings and gate are not painted the same will look odd if you prefer the oiled/black style.

Personally I would prefer the oiled wood. I love wood and try to avoid painting it where I can! Thats just my taste though.

Thanks for your response. It was advised by the company making it, and I agree it would be less upkeep. I did love the old white one though; I was gutted when it was stolen.
PS If anyone comes across a small white Victorian gate at a scrap/ reclamation yard, it's probably mine!

I'd go for what was there before. Not sure why they have suggested otherwise and not sure I get the wood and iron look. If its through the insurance defo go for a like for like replacement. It's terrible you had your other one stolen :-(

maybe if you have a local blacksmith they could make one similar to what was stolen

Thanks. We are having a new one made to replicate the old one. We are only undecided about the finish.
