Hello, talk to me about courtains, please!

I need to get new courtains for the living room and three bedrooms. I live in a Victorian house and have no idea about what to choose. The courtains do not have to be cheap because I plan to keep them for many years. I live in London, do you have any suggestions about where to get nice quality courtains and also any suggestions about patterns and colors that will not get dated soon? In my home country we don't use courtains because of the weather, so this is something new to me. Many thanks for the advice!!!

If you have no idea where to start then I would recomend going to a department store like John Lewis. Have a look at the different fabrics and the displays of curtains and see if anything jumps out at you. They usually have a design and fitting service so they can advise you on different types and what fabric works best with what style.

Or a local company will do the same. You can get them to come to your house and they will bring fabric books. Then together you and they will decide what would look nice at each window.

As for patterns/design that really is down to personal taste. IMO if you are looking to keep them for a long time then I would stick to neutral couours with a subtle pattern. That way you can change the paint/wallpaer and the curtains won't need to be changed.

Having said that, if you see a pattern that yoyu love then get it! It is your home and if you love it you should have it Smile.

Hi

If you live in a Victorian house presumably with single glazed drafty windows, I would recommend getting thermally lined curtains or roman blinds. Will help lower heating bills a bit.

If you have radiator placed immediately underneath your window, consider roman blinds over curtain because curtains will block the heat from the radiator so you will be heating the window (and the outside!) whereas roman blinds won't

Avoid anything too heavily patterned or latest bright colours. They will date quickly and if you replace any items of furniture or repaint in a few years you may need new curtains again.

Lots of online retailers send free samples so that is your first port of call.

And don't rush into a decision. Smile

Thank you very much! And I just noticed that I mispelled curtains - I am very sorry!!! English not being my first language is not an excuse : )

I will look into the thermally lines curtains, thanks for the idea. We don't have radiators nera the windows, but they are single glazed and drafty.

I got mine from here. They make them to order, so great for non standard windows. Mine were eyelets (a bit more modern IMO) and fully thermally lined. I think they are great and definitely worth the money

Sorry, the website doesn't show that they make to order (or not so i could see). I assume they still do, and definitely worth a look round your local store
