how scussy would it be to not paint behind a missive triple wardrobe that is never going to get moved?

In our last house they hadn't done behind the fridge freezer. Mind you, in the flat we'd been in I hadn't done behind a massive mirror or a massive picture.

PoppadumPreach · 24/04/2012 19:29

ooh yomellamoHelly maybe you bought our flat??!

i was about to say i didn't paint behind our fridge freezer in our last flat!!

ditavonteesed · 24/04/2012 19:32

that is funny (and a bit lazy) it would never have even occured to me but I was chatting on phone to freind saying I have no idea how I am going to move the beast of a wardrobe and she pointed out that it is never going to be moved so the only people who would know would be us. Grin just feels a bit wrong.

my parents did this!
in MY house Shock

they very, very, very, very, very, very kindly offered to paint my front room and hallway while we were on holiday.
fab, i thought, as my dad is a total perfectionist. Sadly it turns out my mum was in charge and got him to paint around my big bookcase Hmm

to be fair, we weren't planning on moving it. but now i WANT to (cos i can't)

PoppadumPreach · 24/04/2012 19:36

i agree it feels lazy but in my case re the fridge - there was no way i was going to be able to move it on my own (2 grown men struggled with it enough to put it in)

it was a bit of a shocker when we moved as i had forgotten and when the fridge was removed there was this glaring orange red paint splodge surrounded by a pale yellow - nice!

you do what you have to do - i wouldn't worry about it

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 24/04/2012 19:36

I did it Blush

SwedishEdith · 24/04/2012 19:37

I've only painted round a mirror in our bedroom, not behind it. Only a small area and used a sample pot Grin

ditavonteesed · 24/04/2012 19:38

and thats a point what if we ever move, the people who move in will think we are scussy wont they?

KirstyJC · 24/04/2012 19:38

I did it and I don't care!

The only time it would be seen is if we are changing the furniture, and that would only happen if we were redecorating anyway, so would need to repaint then anyway.

Do it!

PoppadumPreach · 24/04/2012 19:40

you could stand on top of your wardrobe and just gently pour some of the paint down the back of it? Wink

ginmakesitallok · 24/04/2012 19:41

We've got a huge wardrobe that goes virtually right across one wall - I wouldn't dream of trying to move it, we paint round it. In fact we even carpetted round it (so did folk who lived here before) - it wouldn't have sat right on carpet anyway - and the folk who sold us the house warned us.

FidgetPie · 24/04/2012 19:41

I don't see any problem in not painting behind it - just make a note of the colour / keep some back for if you change your mind later (in which case you might have to paint the whole wall as the tone might have faded over time).

craftynclothy · 24/04/2012 19:47

We've had to do this in our bedroom. The wardrobes are too heavy to move. You have to take all the fixtures out to even separate them (even then they're too heavy to move). We've got paint leftover though so can do that wall if we ever move

Rhubarbgarden · 24/04/2012 19:48

I'm currently wondering the same thing. It goes against the grain, doesn't it? But our beast of a wardrobe is such a bastard challenge to move; it has to be disassembled into several very heavy parts and each time it is reassembled the wooden pegs and screws holding it together get dodgier and dodgier (it's an antique). The last time we moved it DH made me promise we wouldn't change the room layout again because it was such a trauma. But now it really does need painting...

lookingforchocolate · 24/04/2012 19:56

so fed up of painting/glossing picking out dog hair when i re did my sitting

room i didnt gloss the skirting board behind my big sofa Blush

southeastastra · 24/04/2012 20:34

blimey no don't bother

Yummymummyyobe1 · 24/04/2012 20:43

I couldn't do it. We finished the nursery at the weekend and were both perturbed that we were unable to get behind the radiator.

DP is going to ask his brother for a hand removing it etc as it is a closed system and then we can paint behind it. xx

southeastastra · 24/04/2012 20:44

taking down a whole radiator is crackers imo, what a faff!

trumpton · 24/04/2012 20:48

Can you not use a radiator roller YUMMY ?

ditavonteesed · 25/04/2012 07:52

so the consensous is that I cn leave it, I was going to get radiator roller and go as far behind as possible.

When I finally get around to painting our bedroom
I'm planning to leave the wardrobes and not paint behind them, as they take up almost all of one wall then i'm planning on not painting any of that wall (it's just white at the moment) so if we did end up moving them then it wouldn't look too odd as it would be a whole white wall rather than a wardrobe shape iyswim.

Somethinginthewoodshed · 25/04/2012 08:23

One of my biggest regrets is spending the three days before I had dc2 scraping off 17 layers ofvwall paper and woodchip, then giving three coats to an alcove that we then entirely filled with a massive wardrobe that will be there forever. Whhhhhhhy? What a bloody waste of time

lookoveryourshoulder · 25/04/2012 09:36

... I had a tenant once that painted round the curtains while they were still hanging...

...They also managed to paint all along the edges of the curtains, curtain rings and pole - it was a joy to behold...
