Photo on profile.

Awkward kitchen. We need to free up the door to the basement to get to the washing machine/freezer.

This is our Plan C (from an online kitchen designer who knows her stuff).

DH doesn't like it. Does it look odd to you?

QuintessentialShadows · 24/04/2012 11:33

She cant know her stuff is she thinks this is good design...

It does not only look odd, it looks awful.

Sidge · 24/04/2012 11:35

Yuk.

There must be a better use of the space.

Having the fridge 'inside' the tall cupboard just looks terrible.

trikken · 24/04/2012 11:36

Something doesnt look right but cant put my finger on it. Lack of work surface maybe?

Bletchley · 24/04/2012 11:39

Yes. The fridge is both lower and further forward than the cupboard to the right of it, so the l ines don't flow

thepuddingchef · 24/04/2012 11:40

worktop space def missing, looks a little like a laundry/extra bit to a kitchen? are you having a table in the middle?

Fizzylemonade · 24/04/2012 11:53

It looks wrong on a few levels, firstly you don't seem to have full depth base units, I can see why but that makes it look awkward.

You have brown shelving that is the same height as the top of the cupboard but then a taller brown dresser/cupboard and then a much smaller door to the right which is your access to your basement. This is made worse by the fridge/freezer being on the left of the brown cupboard. Can you not put the f/f next to the basement door so they are the same height?

Is this just one end of the kitchen? Are you putting in a table?

Fizzylemonade · 24/04/2012 11:54

That came across a bit snooty, sorry, really trying to help

fossil97 · 24/04/2012 13:00

I remember from previous threads your room is very awkward and small. I take it there's more worksurface at the other end of the room?

You could blend the various parts together more with having them all the same colour rather than a mix of timber/cream. I saw a feature in a book of a little kitchen with lots of odd shelves and units, and they tied it together by using a really strong colour, a turquoise IIRC, which really gave it a lift.

We have something similar in our kitchen, a 450mm deep, tall pantry cupboard just in side the door, (so less of a barrier) and then the full depth units following beside it. It is absolutely brilliant and shelved out top to bottom full of tins, packets etc.

I like the shelves that make use of little spaces as well. I don't think it's too bad a design for practicality. There is a place for everything even the microwave. It just doesn't look like a showroom display but why should it?

herhonesty · 24/04/2012 13:33

definitely not right.sorry. why dont you have just a small under counter fridge and a freezer or fridgefreezer in the basement?

RnB · 24/04/2012 13:38

It doesn't work. Is that tall cupboard next to the door already there? If not then I would put the fridge there and have bottom units only and lots of shelves at the top.

Methe · 24/04/2012 13:39

where would you work?

Methe · 24/04/2012 13:40

and where is the oven?

ClaimedByMe · 24/04/2012 13:44

is that a radiator on the right hand side? you dont need a radiator in the kitchen, thats a waste of a lot of space!

The whole room just looks odd!

jamaisjedors · 24/04/2012 13:48

Sorry, disappeared for lunch. Will put all the room shots up and then answer your questions.

Can you put the ff by the entrance door? and make your cupboards shift round teh corner? It looks odd having the worktop, ff, brown cupboard and basement door all together as they are different colours and sizes.

If not, can you have all doors the same colour to trick the eye?

blackteaplease · 24/04/2012 13:54

What's in the brown cupboard, is it a pantry? Can you make it twice the size and put the fridge freezer inside it?

mum47 · 24/04/2012 13:56

It looks more like the "before" picture! Def looks odd, don't be press-ganged into going with it.. am sure there is a much better layout to be had.

blackteaplease · 24/04/2012 13:59

Me again. If your freezer is in the basement, can you have an under counter fridge instead, giving you more counter space? You could put a cupboard front on it to make it blend in.

jamaisjedors · 24/04/2012 14:13

Ok, none of it is there already apart from the radiator which is a heavy cast iron one and that would be expensive to move -and dh refuses--

It is only one side of the room, I will post the other side in a minute.

We are going to change our fridge, I specified and non-built in one because a) they are cheaper
b) I don't like matchy matchy
c) you can stick things on them
d) I can't find built-in ones in other people's houses!

There is a round table in the middle of the room that we are insisting on which blocks some of the space by the radiator.

We also need access to both doors and a full-depth worktop (which is what we have now) creates an awkward corner sticking out to get round to get to the basement.

The colours etc. are definitely not final, but we don't want all white (in fact DH doesn't want white at all, he thinks it's too clinical.

Another marking ave til I get to my computer!

Aworryingtrend · 24/04/2012 14:17

Layout definitely looks odd and very mismatched. Can the radiator be moved? Why is the tall cupboard next to the fridge so tall? Could it be the same height as the fridge?

SoupDragon · 24/04/2012 14:18

The shallow worktop looks daft TBH.

MrsShitty · 24/04/2012 14:19

Is that a radiator on the right? Do you need a radiator in a kitchen?

SoupDragon · 24/04/2012 14:19

I agree that the tall brown unit looks wrong. Which door is which BTW?
