Anyone with handpainted kitchen cabinets, what colour have you got?

I have a medium oak worktop. The room is large and light with a vaulted ceiling and velux. South west facing. Currently the cabinets are F&B new white and the walls are dulux natural calico (a non yellow cream)
Have just extended to the side and put a new floor in, a light cream polished porcelain tiles. I would like to go for a greyish sort of colour. Have tried F&B Pavillion grey which looks too bluey and Hardwick white, too dark. I would ideally like a warm sort of grey as the room is very bright. Anyone got any ideas?

FB old White for Walls with new White painted kitchen, this was recommended to me and looks amazing..

hobnob · 23/04/2012 22:14

Mine are F&B French Grey, which is greeny. They're beautiful, but it depends on whether greeny grey is what you're after.

minipie · 23/04/2012 23:13

Try Birch White or Grey Birch Light by Sanderson (or Kent Grey if you want something darker)

If possible, best to pick a colour that comes in an oil based eggshell (F&B only do water based unless you get it colour matched elsewhere) as it wears better than water based (or so I am told Smile)

justasecond · 23/04/2012 23:52

Thanks all. Minipie - yes I also picked up about the F&b oil eggshell thing. I last painted the kitchen in 2009 when the oil eggshell was still available, it was a great paint and I got a good durable finish. I think a colour from The Little Greene paint co may be better as they still do an oil eggshell.
I got a sample of the French grey from Little Greene but it is a little too cool I ideally want a beigy sort of grey or maybe I could try the French grey pale version?
Kicking myself as I should really have gone for a warmer colour tile or at least not polished as it is quite modern looking.
I have bravely put some pictures on my profile!

we have got Elephant's breath and an island in Charleston Grey. Will pm you a link to a photo.

minipie · 24/04/2012 09:47

Little Greene French Grey pale really is a pale version of French Grey - so it will still be cool.

Also check out Paint & Paper Library, lots of neutral colours and they do oil eggshell.

If you find a F&B colour you like, you can get other companies to colour match it in an oil eggshell (be careful though - we tried this with our local Leyland and it was a rubbish match, but other people have had good results. Little Greene did a good colour match of the F&B colour though).

Kitchen looks v nice!

neepsandtatties I was just looking at elephants breath this am, will be great to see a pic.
Minipie will check out P&P thanks!

Mine are Little Greene Tracery - it's quite a greeny grey (looked positively minty out of the tin) but they have a lovely colour card. I am impressed with the oil eggshell paint, I painted them myself and it was quite forgiving.

How about Lead Colour or Rolling Fog, a more definite grey/mocha colour to offset all the pale neutrals?

CiderwithBuda · 24/04/2012 14:09

We went with a Dulux in the end. Called 'Found Fossil'. Will try and put a photo on my profile. I may be some time!

CiderwithBuda · 24/04/2012 14:20

Sorry. Failed. Am useless.

Anyway it's a nice warm grey! Have a look on the Dulux website.

justasecond · 24/04/2012 22:32

Fossil97 I bought a sample of Rolling fog today it is quite nice seems similar to Portland stone, so much so that I got them mixed up when applying a second coat!
Also got elephants breath from F&B. All confused about what to do. The new floor tiles and the old colour on the cabinets 'new white' seem to clash badly now and I can't visualise a replacement colour with the new tiles! Feel a bit depressed about it all. Why oh why did I want modern polished tiles when I like the painted kitchen look?!!!!

Don't be depressed, justasecond. Your kitchen looks wonderful and modern tiles and handpainted kitchens aren't mutually exclusive. How about a more 'colour' colour for your cabinets than grey?

Noddyholder is fab at this sort of thing. Are you there, Noddy, to help our justaminute out of her despond?

By the way, the Little Greene french grey is completely different from the F&B one. This is what mine looks like: (Ridiculously long link. Hope it works.)

fossil97 · 24/04/2012 22:51

Sounds like you might have nearly as many tester pots as I do - shall I post a few? Grin

Did you like Rolling Fog?

also with darker cabinets you could try a darker handle like a black iron one if you can find one not too "blacksmithy" - Ikea do a few.

Pannacotta · 24/04/2012 22:52

www.higham.co.uk/sydenhamkitchen.htm

This kitchen (which I am always linking to on MN!) is painted in the Little Greene French Grey and I think it looks lovely, it goes with the cream worktop and wooden floors so should look good with your flooring and worktop.

Do you still think it looks too cool/cold when you see it in use on units?

E Breath is more taupe than grey IMO.

SwedishEdith · 24/04/2012 23:09

Would you consider a blue? From Pannacotta's link this one looks nice www.higham.co.uk/denmeadkitchen.htm

puffylovett · 24/04/2012 23:11

Have you tried Cornforth white? It has lavendery undertones, it's lovely (or battleship grey as hubby calls it Hmm)
Lighter and fresher than pavilion Gray.
Or how about dove Gray?

justasecond · 24/04/2012 23:32

You are all so lovely! (wells up) thankyou!!
I love that kitchen panacotta and the colour looks very different than it does in my kitchen. It came out very bluey and looks almost exactly the same as the pavillion grey.
Fossil thanks for the offer thats so kind but I am going to hit brewers one last time tommorow to buy a load more, I am determined to start the job by the weekend!!! I do like the Rolling fog but will have to see how all the colours look in the daylight tommorow.
