Anybody got an idea of how much this will cost?

Plastering:

Hall, stairs and landing - ground floor measures about 4x1.75m, landing is same. Just a straight stairway, no bends etc. Both ceilings will need boarding over before plastering and wall paper will need to be removed beforehand.

Two bedrooms - both 3.5 x3.5m each. One needs the ceiling done too and will need to be boarded over. The other is just the walls.

One kitchen ceiling, 4.5x2.5 will need boarding over too before plastering.

Be grateful if you have had similar work done on similar sized rooms, if you could let me know what it cost.

Thanks.

are you doing this yourself or getting trades in?

Where abouts are you? London tends to cost more than the country.

DueinSeptember · 21/04/2012 21:02

Thanks mummy in spain. We're in Wales.

Not doing it ourselves, getting a plasterer in.

ok, can you give me the height of the walls and I will work out roughly how much plaster board.

Skiming depends on the plasterer to be honest

Is he supplying or are you? etc.

Off to the top of my head about 500gbp but could be more depending on the amount of plaster board and plaster etc

Thanks mummy in spain - we've just had a quote and it's £2300 (£2000 labour, £300 materials). Walls are about 2.5m high.

Shit that seems a lot

How many days is he quoting?

Hang on just eating then I will try and work the figures out.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 23/04/2012 21:13

DueIn - that's comparable to what I was quoted. Shocking isn't it!!

MummyInSpain - if you fancy being MummPoppingOverToTheUK - I'd knaw your arm off to do it for that price!!

mummyinspain · 23/04/2012 21:53

Did my own pastering, wireing and plumbing in my 16c cottage! Wish Icould popover and do it for you ladies but I am up to my eyes in work over here

right I get to 225 for matterials but that is based on board, plaster only not joint compund, angle beed, screws etc.

Is he working on stilts?

Ok couple of suggestions,

Do you have any local "trade skill" colleges? Get on the phone and have a chat with them, there MAY be a couple of students / tutors greatful for the work.

Go on a plastering course........ come on its easy if a bloke can do it so can you.

If you are going to pay for it, at that price it needs to be flawless, so if he qualified? can you see examples / photos? Tell him you are thinking of down lighting the wall and need a perfect flinish! if he is good he won't be worried!

Ask around see if an friends uncle is a plasterer.

Do you have a jewson's about? Go in there and have a chat with the counter staff see if they no anyone (Jew staff tend to be ex trade and I bet they can mentioin a few names)

Get some more quotes, 3 as a minimum.

Good luck

Hi, sorry only just seeing the further replies. I got a couple more quotes and someone quoted us £1600 all in with materials. I'm glad I did as I've seen this guy's work and it's very good. So we're going to go with him!

Thanks for the advice mummyinspain and hope you get it sorted chippinin.

Your Walls behind the wallpaper may not need plastering - I decorated 3 bedrooms recently and only one bedroom needed lining paper before painting. Only had to strip one layer of wallpaper off though. I had shallow artex ceilings so it was an easy skim plastering job for my plasterer who did it on stilts (empty rooms though). 3 bedroom ceilings in 1.5 days for £250 which included materials

DueinSeptember · 12/05/2012 11:56

Thanks Myron, unfortunately we have the most terrible walls. It's a 1920's house and although the walls are solid, the surfaces are really flakey and awful. I think there's a name for it (the type of surface) but can't remember now.
