New bath: enamelled steel or carronite (plastic)

They both look the same whiteness. But.

Metal bath makes the water go cold quicker, so not such a nice bathing experience.

Both the same price.

i would go for steel. i think the enamel finish is nicer than plastic. also i think plastic scratches more easily.

we replaced our standard sized plastic bath with a bigger steel one - i love it and haven't had any issues with the bath water going cold.

If you have a shower over the bath the metal one will be better as the weight of a standing person can distort the plastic bath and lead to leakage round the side. Metal is just more durable all-round IMHO.

LittleFrieda · 18/04/2012 20:30

We have a separate shower, so there is no standing/showering in the bath. I prefer the idea of steel I think it looks much shinier and nicer but DH favours placky because of its heat-retention.

In all fairness he has baths more often.

But perhaps metal baths losing heat is a bit of a myth these days. Perhaps they are much better than the old cast iron baths?

definitely steel

Pannacotta · 18/04/2012 20:39

Steel. Look at Bette baths, they have a great range.

fresh · 18/04/2012 20:55

Steel takes longer to warm up than plastic, but stays warmer for longer. And Pannacotta is right, Bette baths are great.

LittleFrieda · 18/04/2012 21:45

fresh - good point.

I think you have all pretty much confirmed what I think.

I'll show DH this thread and see what he thinks.

Thank you all.

It depends on the bath. We always had steel baths, but in more recent years the plastic ones have really improved. We have had our Sottini bath for about 10 years, and it still looks lovely. You can't use Vim type cleaners on it, but you shouldnt use them on enamel either.

LittleFrieda · 19/04/2012 12:44

I've odered a Bette bath, thank you all for your help.

HandMadeTail - Agree they are much better than they used to be.
