How much did your kitchen cost? (how long is a piece of string? ;)

I'm interested in hearing how much or how little your kitchen cost.

We are struggling to get quotes - 2 people came out and never got back to us - I'm guessing they couldn't make enough money from us.

1 has just quoted 14,000 euros (incl. a fridge, hob, and fan and fitting) but that seems really excessive to us as there will only be about 3 base units and 4 upper and laminate worktops.

My mum thinks that is reasonable Hmm and that we are being tight.

So?

BTW no building work or plumbing or electricity involved and the floor is done, no decorating to do either.

Our kitchen from Howdens was just under £5k, 3 wall units 11 base units, sink, range cooker, , wine cooler.

Thank you.

That does sound a little extortionate for very little units.
you could get a bespoke kitchen all top brand appliances and quarts for that I would think

kitchen fitting companies usually make a handsome living out of it, but they save you the worry of finding different tradesmen. A competent local joiner can usually do a better job and if you can agree to pay his day rate (about £130/day) it would take a few days depending on size and complexity.

Places that sell kitchen units and worktops almost always have a 50% sale on.

Kitchen fitters are notorious for poor-quality and non-compliant electrical and plumbing work, so I'd try to find local professionals for those particular jobs, preferably finished and replastered after removing the old units and before fitting the new.

Anybody can do plastering, but only a plasterer can do a great job of it.

jamaisjedors · 15/04/2012 14:49

I have contacted a local carpenter, he's going to call me next week.

His price included fitting "for one euro". I was specifically going for someone independant to avoid that kind of sales talk...

p.s. I did a kitchen last year, the units (Magnet Caldo Walnut, solid wood doors) was about £5.5k, materials cost, at their "half price" sale.

D0oinMeCleanin · 15/04/2012 14:52

£500 DIY job from BandQ fitted for £500, along with the plastering (of whole house) tiling, bathroom fitted (which was £300 from BandQ) flooring done (whole house) windows boxed in, painting (whole house) and various other small jobs like shelving, plumbing in washer etc.

I luffs being related to a builder.

PigletJohn · 15/04/2012 14:52

p.p.s.

If your professional fitter buys the materials at 1/3rd retail list price, which he probably can, and charges you 100% retail price, he will be making some thousands out of the materials profit, so can afford to show a low notional labour cost. Just look at the bottom line.

jamaisjedors · 15/04/2012 19:26

That would be more DH's price range Dooin, but although he could fit it, in practice he doesn't have the time.

We could certainly dismantle the kitchen and assemble some flat-packs though - I would rather have a professional for the work surfaces/sink joints because that's where our current kitchen is peeling (fitted by the previous owners).

Thanks Pigletjohn for the tips, yes I know that the fitter is making the money somewhere, on both the units and the accessories etc. but I would rather have a transparent fitting price - I hate that kind of rubbish.

I even said to him "well of course you make your margin elsewhere" and he said no no, it's because I run the shop myself and fit myself so it doesn't cost me anything to fit (err yes apart from a week's work... Hmm).

£3,600 14units, dishwasher, double oven, hob, hood, floor and wall tiles from B&Q

nocake · 15/04/2012 21:10

About £6k which included a complete rewire, plasterboarding and plastering ceiling, plastering half the walls, lots of units, sink, taps, lighting, extractor, new radiator and two guys at a day rate to do plumbing and fit the units and worktops. To save money we ripped out the old units, pulled down the old ceiling, reinsulated, tiled and painted. We also bought all the bits from the cheapest places we could find, including eBay.

We coordinated all the work with different tradesmen coming in to do each job. It meant we were able to pick the best person for each job although making sure they all arrived at the right time caused a few headaches.

Weta · 16/04/2012 14:54

Whereabouts in France are you, and which kitchen shop did you try?

We live in Luxembourg but have ordered a kitchen over the border in Lorraine. It's a similar price to yours (slightly less) but includes a quartz worktop (which is about 3000 euros), an integrated fridge/freezer, an integrated oven (part of a full-length unit), another full-length cupboard, a hob, a range hood, an integrated dishwasher, sink and taps, a corner unit with lazy susan, about 5 base units and two horizontal upper units. So I do think yours sounds overpriced.

I have a friend who is an interior designer and she reckons it's fine to buy Ikea units as all the designers use similar MDF carcasses anyway (we would have but the colours didn't suit), though she recommends getting worktops, appliances etc elsewhere.

Fly also have a kitchen service which seems reasonably priced.

Ikea 6 grand for a huge u shaped kitchen with island, butler sink and 2 integrated appliances. Prob have 20 units including utility room.
Solid wood units, solid oak tops.
Bit of a faff as it is flat packed but half the price anyone else was quoting and it looks the business.

MrsJohnDeere · 16/04/2012 18:14

£21k. Decent sized kitchen with a lot of units (including pull out larder cupboard which bumped the price up). High end appliances, pricey tiles, but cheapish units. Did include 4 lomg days solid work by an electrician, 3 by a plasterer, and took 4 weeks in total.

jamaisjedors · 16/04/2012 18:56

Weta we are in Normandy.

I am reconsidering IKEA now that I have seen the Ramsjo white which I quite like - I visited a store (first time ever!) in January and didn't like the look of the doors I saw there but I didn't see that one (want wood rather than gloss).

Thanks all for your prices, interesting to hear them.

£30k-ish -Eggersman kitchen.

bounty007 · 16/04/2012 20:51

+£30k for kitchen plus 10k for AGA Blush

myron · 17/04/2012 00:39

I'm doing loads of kitchen research atm. U shaped kitchenand separate utility - units from IKEA come to £4K. Non IKEA quartz worktop - quotes coming in £3K - £5K! Appliances /sinks/taps will be another £7K. So far, it's £15ishK. Fitting is £1.5K by my builder. And then there's the flooring & tiles & radiators, lighting still .... I think that I might have to compromise a tad on the appliances. My aim was to choose cheapo IKEA carcasses so I can splash the dosh on the appliances and worktop but I seem to be seduced by the wine coolers, domino hobs and boiling water taps....

Alargeglassofred · 17/04/2012 20:46

Just spent £20,000!!! I know!! Large kitchen! All appliances!!looks good though!

PigletJohn · 17/04/2012 23:42

I've got a feeling that kitchens cost whatever you've got... bit like children.

delilahbelle · 20/04/2012 07:31

About 1k.
Did most of it ourselves - floor and wall tiling and painting/decorating ourselves.
Replaced all unit doors but only some of the units themselves.
New oven/hob.
New worktop/sink/tap.
Couple of days labour for the plumbing/new oven/fitting the worktop

Took us about 3 months as we did things a bit at a time though - def a low cost option and it looks a lot better, but inconvenient at the time.

jamaisjedors · 20/04/2012 16:35

delilah did you pay for a couple of days' labour out of the 1K? Because here it seems like it's 500? minimum for a days' labour.

28k

Large kitchen with wall down. All mod cons (but not 10 k on an Aga; 1.3 on a rangemaster)
