My sister is beside herself due to the strange rotting smell in her house. She is incredibly clean and very tidy. She empties her bins daily, has washed her house and scrubbed from top to bottom. But it still stinks.
Any ideas as to what she can do about it?It smells like something is rotting away.

Is it a mouldy potato?

They smell awful.

Ugh! no, definitely not, she has cleaned out every corner, even threw out all her food and bought new.....I think it is affecting her mental health

Is it a damp smell? Could there be a leak somewhere which is causing a rot behind the wall/under the floorboards?
Dead mouse somewhere? Again, under the floors, in the attic maybe?

Could it be an old mouse nest somewhere like behind the oven?

A friend had this and is fucking stank

Dead mice smell dreadful, but dead rats smell for months. truly horrible. Could there be one under the floorboards, can she narrow it down to a rough location?

Has she had the drains checked? We had a dead rat stuck in the drain at work once and that had an unholy stink. The rat was outside and away from the building but the smell was coming in through the internal drains.

Valpollicella · 11/04/2012 23:41

True, Six. Mice tend to fossify quite quickly. Rats have more flesh to decompose

Is it fishy? Someone else posted that they had this prob and it was due to the light bulb holder degrading (went yellow and when they went to change the bulb it fell apart).

When I read it I realised I had had the same prob in my bedroom with the main light and that when I changed the fitting (which disintegrated in my hand) it went away.

I hadn't been too worried as I only used the light rarely - usually use the bedside lamp.

If it is a light fitting the part that needs to be replaced costs about £2!
