Loft conversions

Anyone recently had a loft conversion on there house? This is something we are beginning to think about for our house. How easy was it? Did you gain alot of space? How was living with the work (have DD's 3.5 and 22mths)
We have a very large loft so were thinking of creating a large master bedroom and e-suite and a home office for DH.
We would lose DD2's room for the stairs but its a box room. She would then gain our current main bedroom which is much larger.

Basically id love to hear your experiences.

We had one done 10 years ago that gave us a master bedroom, en-suite and a small office area. It took 3 weeks ( at the time i had a 3 month old baby! plus toddler) the first week they put the windows in so they didn't have to work from inside the house until the third week when they put the stairs in ( does that make sense!!!!)

I would advice that you get a proper loft company to do it as we know somebody who got geneal builders and their conversion was done badly .

Also we decided to have an extra velux window put in halfway through the work and paid more than i think we would have done if it had been in the original specification.

Have to say i LOVE my loft room and have no regrets having had it done.

If the house isn't detached do look into Party Wall considerations.

Just done it. We are semi detached so it was a mansard and hip to gable loft conversion. It took 3 months. I love it, worth every penny. The builders were fab with our kids and became part of the family practically. I was 37 weeks pregnant when it practically completed and was not stressful at all.

My tips are get as big as possible light well over the stairs for maximum light on the first floor and if you can do it within your cubic metreage for permitted development, raise the ceiling as much as poss to make it feel as large as poss.

If you want a nose at the loft bathroom we did see my blog www.colporter.tumblr.com. We also went for big master suite plus home office.

In mine right now! Very lucky as my father who is retired has done it for us! Has taken a very long time! (was preg with DS when started & he is now 3)!! But hey only cost £7,000 instead of £40 odd which our neighbours paid!GrinGrinGrinGrin. Love it, very bright & airy. We will (soon have) a roll top bath in one end of the bedroom & can look up at the stars!! Can't wait!

It was mid forties for the basic build, then all of our extras, cupboards built, dado rails, bathroom fitted. We are in London though, which inflates it rather!

Colours are pale french grey top, and french grey bottom - both Little Greene.
