redoing windows and front porch of victorian house. currently door knob and letterbox are black a bit like this

and

www.thedoorknockercompany.co.uk/acatalog/info_253.html

whats in place at the moment is not original (paint peeling off) so no point re using but cant decide whether to go for black again or polished chrome, like this..

i live in a village in the country and am worried it might look a bit "renovated".

sorry. a banal question i know ....

herhonesty · 09/04/2012 21:00

Victoran? Why not brass then?

herhonesty · 10/04/2012 13:00

just not that keen - everything else inside is chrome, and none of my neighbours have brass....

I like the pointed octagonal central knob you showed. I have one of those on my panelled door. Do you have a "yale" type lock, and is it the older type with a plain round cylinder showing? There is a very nice escutcheon available for that.

I'm guessing you've got doorknob, letterbox, keyholes. Is there a knocker? I prefer larger sized furniture on a front door, IMO small stuff looks mean. You can add a fingerplate if you like, it can also cover any redundant keyholes.

I think chrome looks better on a dark-painted door than on a light one. However if the door faces the sun, dark, and especially black, paint will crack sooner due to the heat.

For best results paint the door before fitting the furniture, but after drilling any holes for it. You sometimes have to rasp out the letterbox hole if the new one has a bigger flap. The letterbox should be as far as possiblle away from any nightlatch as it is possible to reach through with a simple home-made tool.
