Help!
It's TOO YELLOW!
We can't afford to re do it,so it'll have to stay.
it's a nice yellow, just err....bright,and in a small sunny south facing 18 month olds bedroom.

So how can I tone it down with decor?

Got any nice ideas for massive decals wall coverings?

Would shelving in the chimney reseses help?
Should they be painted say, dark brown,or white?

His cot is pine, his drawers are not my taste, can I get rid of them on these grounds? blue mammut ones,he has a large ikea map play rug thing, the carpet is cream...

Help!

I think you just need to break up the colour with things. I think a bright yellow sounds lovely for a yong boys room, but even so I can imagine its a bit 'in your face' if theres no contrast.

I would put the shelving in - my first thought is white but I don't suppose the colour would matter, and put his books etc up.

Ikea do some lovely bright fabric on a white back ground thats not too expensive, you could a big/or a couple of small cheap canvases and cover them with that to make some art - or just hem bondaweb the edges and you could cover a large area of the wall with that.

You could buy a couple of test pots of other colours and paint, and paint some basic shapes onto a large area of wall to break up the expanse of yellow.

Posters? You could get a large map of the world and put that up somewhere, they are usually pale green and blue which would add a calm focal point. Or if you prefer then you can get big mickey/ceebeebies/latest cartoon posters.

My daughter -8- chose pink - unfortunately quite the most shocking pink! We found a nice (as in very large)poster map of the world in The Works for £3.99 which has taken some of the rosy glow off the room and now we don't need sunglasses. He's maybe a tad young for a map of the world at 18 months but Hey! its educational and cheap! Or use a roll of wallpaper as a sort of (extremely large) border!!

Oh,the map is a fab idea, will do that and the shelves....maybe ikea print canvas things if it still seems too much...thankyou,I'm calming down now!

Gah,redecorating is just as stressfull as buying the blummin' house!

You need to accessorise the room using white furniture. I would paint the shelves white and i would paint the cot white. Definitely get rid of the chest of drawers, it will look like an explosion in a paint factory with that much colour. These are good drawers and white:

The walls should be the only thing that is coloured, the furniture should all be white, bedding white etc. They you could always decorate with simple pictures.

This is quite a good map picture would calm down the room a lot, and is a piece that you wouldn't grow out of, we bought one for my son who is 4 and his 16 year old cousin has the same one.

My sons bedroom is a Really Bright Yellow. I thought it was too much at first, but he loves it and now so do I. I think it's great when they can start choosing what they like, and zingy colours are fab for boys especially as they grow older. Pastels are just too soft by half!

My son (who is Beano comic mad) decided on a LURID yellow for his walls, a bright zingy acidic lemon which I never would have chosen in a million years. But in a change from being my usual interior decorating Nazi, I let him choose. And he loves it, and I love it now too, as it's 'him'

He has 2 massive Beano/Dandy prints on the walls and a bright red massive chest of drawers!

Surely it would be cheaper to buy another pot of paint than change the furniture and get lots of posters etc? If you really hate it why not just paint one of the walls (or all of them) a lighter colour?

Wow...I thought this thread had died!

we haven't moved in yet so I have no idea whether or not he will sleep in there.

But we painted the chimney recess's white, and it looks better,I think once his stuff is in it will calm it down too,ATM it's just an empty box of yellow Grin

We have bought him a £2 atlas from waterstones and these dino wall stickers which I fell in love with (I paid less than that though Confused )
We may still swap his mammut chest of drawers for a nice old dark wood one,if I find a Goodun' at the local 2nd hand/antique place.

Thanks for all the advice.

Do you mean the walls are painted yellow? With emulsion paint on paper or plaster?

How much do you think it would cost to repaint?
