Is a house ever done ?

We have now completely stripped back every room in this house, replastered, decorated etc. I've spent a grand this weekend on plastering, paint and new doors and still there is so much to do.
Many rooms need to be done again, the first one we decorated.
Does it ever end ?

Oh and yes £1000 includes buying the doors from Wickes, nothing fancy.

I'm starting to think my dh does not charge enough!!

Heswall · 07/04/2012 09:58

I was charged by a family friend of a friend £100 per door to hang it and put the knobs on and the thing that goes on the door frame.
Maybe I need to shop around.
The trouble is when you have a husband who is not handy you have no idea if the job is difficult or not, so whether the quote is reasonable or not.
Never again will I pay for painting but carpentry I could not do myself so I suppose I'll just have to find somebody cheaper if that seems excessive.

£100 for a single door is not excessive, but if you found a pro joiner and paid him day rates to do several doors in one go, I think you would find it cheaper.

A pro joiner can generally do a better job faster.

If you are not good at hanging doors, it is quite slow and difficult.

poorbuthappy · 07/04/2012 13:16

Gosh, £100 per door?
And yes he is a pro joiner.
Blimey.

Heswall · 07/04/2012 14:01

How much would your DH charge poorbuthappy ? And do you live up north ?

No we are in Wales, and most things are cheaper here!
Mates rates £30 per door.
Non mates £ 40-50 depending on how nasty it looks!

Heswall · 07/04/2012 17:40

Ah there you go that's the answer I am seriously considering moving to North wales for that very reason, just a few miles over the border and everything shoots up in price.
I can see Wales from my bedroom window Grin

You need to look further south. Ummm about as south as you can see! Grin

£30 including loading and unloading the van, carrying tools in and out of the house, planing and trial fitting...

hardly worth getting out of bed for Sad

They had some Howdens doors on ebay for £15 each, but I did wonder whether they were the real thing, as everything seems to be copied these days.

Heswall · 07/04/2012 18:08

If your mortgage is £200 a month then yes it is worth getting out of bed for.
All relative isn't it ?
