Be honest, for a single woman on her own, no dependents.

For your mum, ok then, it's fine, it doesn't need much work but negatives:

  1. open stairs, small looking radiator - it will be expensive to heat the living room as the heat will travel upstairs, perhaps look at that.

  2. as your mother ages, a downstairs loo might be handy, I also assume the shower is in the bath, this will be harder to get in/out of than a walk in, separate shower if she gets infirm later.

However, you could fix both these by encasing the stairs and putting a loo and wash basen in the space underneath.

If I were 66 and thinking of staying in a house for many years, I'd want one with (at the minimum) a downstairs loo.
Downstairs walk in shower would be even better.
(From personal experience of the problems of elderly parents)

She would have preferred no garden, but its very difficult to find. I think it looks bigger on the pics, its quite small in RL.
She did look at bungalows but a lot of them really did need gutting (£30k etc). Then she decided she wanted stairs because she felt it was important not to get in the habit of nt climbing stairs.
Shes quite a young 66, is going on a Shirley Valentine greek island hopping holiday with her friend next month, and apparently has a 49 yrvold toyboy but i dont want to know about that Wink

Wow, what wonderful value for money!
I think it looks spot on. Nice and neutral.... Nice size garden.. and everything looks 'done'.
Will you live locally? So, could someone cut the grass for her? Then, all boxes sorted!
And, as you said.... really fab house to sell on in the future.. great for families.
Good stairs for stairlift in the future....and scope to put a downstairs loo in, if needed.
Bills might be a bit on the higher side to heat...
I don't think a 3 bed semi is OTT for a single mature woman... as you've said - it's a long term investment. So, I think it's a clever idea.

mosschops30 · 04/04/2012 10:36

We're not local, but she has lots of friends close by and she even said shes gonna buy a cheap light mower to do the grass herself

I think its a lovely house and doesn't need anything doing. What your DM may want to do with decor is her choice but its all perfectly servicable.

When my parents divorced my DM bought a house very similar to this as she was thinking along the lines of -

There are neighbours at hand should something happen
No major building work
Easily re sold should that be needed.

10 years later she is living in an extraordinary house that she is already struggling to take care of!! Hmm So much for forward planning!

The only thing that might put me off is that it looks like its on an estate. That means noisy kids and bad parking. If your DM isn't bothered by that then it isn't a problem - if she is a cantankerous awld biddy like me then it will bug her Grin

mosschops30 · 04/04/2012 12:49

Its on a very large estate but she is on the main road rather than being in one of the cul de sacs so should be as ok as it can ever be.

Thanks for all the posts Smile

Downstairs loo a must
Hedge maintenance a pita

Otoh, open staircase great for a stairlift - I know she is only 66 but if it is her forever house worth thinking ahead

PinkPolkaDots · 04/04/2012 13:46

I think it looks great for the situation you have described now. Agree about thinking long term though - downstairs toilet/shower and garden maintenance once shes older may be an issue, but I dont think any of those are things that can't be easily sorted years down the line.
Once she has put her own stamp on it I think it will be lovely and really homely!

mosschops30 · 04/04/2012 19:15

But our budget didnt stretch to a house with 2 toilets. Her priorities were in a decent area, no decorating necessary, small or none existent garden, 3 bedrooms.

I don't think a downstairs toilet is a deal breaker, your DM is still quiter young and hopefully has many years before her mobility goes. As mentioned before the stairs are good for a stairlift so she could still get upstairs, and in the future if it was a problem then you could price up having a loo put in. Worst case scenario then there are comodes and caravan type portaloos.

I would go for it, I think its a perfect house for her needs.
