Who removes phone sockets and wires?

We're just doing some fairly major works upstairs, and as a result, we've got a couple of phone sockets in an awkward place in a bedroom. We don't really want to plug a phone in in the bedroom, so we'd rather just get rid of them. Is this something that we can do ourselves, or something we need to get someone to do for us?

Hello!
I have always asked our electrician to do it but am not sure if this is really necessary.
Sorry that isnt very helpful is it?!

You can just cut the wire if you want to!

Usually, only the "master socket" belongs to the phone company. This is the one that connects to the incoming cable from the street. It contains various protective devices to prevent a problem in your house affecting the network. All the other sockets are extensions (slaves) which are (usually) connected using a concealed plug connector inside the master socket. Most electricians will know how to safely remove extensions and their cabling.

If you just cut through the entire cable, your cutters are likely to short together the cores inside, so it is preferable to remove the cores singly.

Hah - good thing I asked. I asked the electrician today and he says the bizarrely located one we wanted to remove is in fact the master socket.

So it was handy that I didn't chop through it Wink
