Have you had artex ceilings made into smooth plaster ones?

Most of the houses we see have textured ceilings and we hate them, how much did it cost to get yours done?

I will go and have a stiff drink before I read any replies.

We are in the mids if it makes a difference.

I had one sloping ceiling done and it cost £100 and was done at mates rates by a neighbour.

All depends on size of ceilings etc so your probably best being brave and getting a few quotes

The more you get done in one go, the cheaper it will be. We had artex ceilings in every room and have got rid of all of them now, bar one which I think we will keep for posterity Grin

If you can bear to get them all done in one go then this will be the cheapest option as IME you get charged for a half day as a minimum even if it only takes an hour iyswim. It's really difficult to give precise figures though as it will depend on the size and number of ceilings, plus how deep the artex is - if it's particularly deep grooves it might need a couple of layers.

At a guess I would estimate around 100 a room if you get them all done at once, more if you do them one or two at a time.

We had a whole three bed house done for under £700. Took four days and generated a horrific amount of dust. Like Daisy, I've 'saved' a room for posterity Grin.

My ceiling was 20 metres square and it cost £180. However it involved removing all the actual artex as it turned out it hadn't been keyed onto the base properly. He wouldn't put more plaster on top of the artex as the whole ceiling would have come down. He arrived at 07.50 and left at 4.30 with only a few breaks. He'd told me when he came to give a quote it would take a day but at the time he didn't realise he was going to have to remove the ceiling and was just going to skim it all.

So it's not as expensive as I thought, I imagined you'd all say it was £300 a room but we are looking at 3 beds so not huge houses.

Thank you, it's re-assured me.

Agree that it depends on room size and the depth of the artex. We had 3 ceilings done - shallow artex. Quotes came in at £250 - 340 (including materials) for 1-1.5 days' work. Final negotiated price was £210 and it took one day. Mine were empty rooms though so it was easy for the plasterer who did it on a pair of of cool hopping stilts. I also have quotes for the rest of the house (all the same artexed ceilings and roughly 2000 sq ft) to be skimmed for £1200 - £1500 and 4/5 days' work with some shifting around of furniture involved though plus high ceiling work in the landing/hall area.

We had most of the house done (except the DCs bedrooms); honestly, the ceiling in the living room looked like an upside-down meringue, really vile. We do have a mate who is a plasterer, so it was mates rates, and he did a lot of other stuff at the same time (removed loft hatches etc), so it's difficult to give an estimate.

Luckily he was able to do it the "easy" way - i.e. scrape off the worst of the knobbly bits (messy!), fix any loose boards/lumps/bumps/holes, then skim with a smooth plaster. They look fantastic, and it was money well spent.

My mum tried to do her living room the same way, but it turned out to be a nightmare; a bit like dexterthecat, her artex was unstable, and they had to knock out all of the plasterboard and replace it, which was much more costly.
