Moving to Swindon Area

We will be moving to the Swindon Area from a completely rural location a long way from Wiltshire because of a job in the next year. Can anyone recommend a good place to look for a house within cheap commuting distance of Swindon but with a country feel, and good primary and secondary schools?

Reasonably priced houses would also be a plus!

I like the wilts/oxon border.

We lived in shrivenham. Suspect it isn't cheap though... Primary school good (or it was) but secondary is in faringdon, which didn't have a great rep, but might be better now.

There are a gazillion villages which would suit you though - you need to take a weekend and go and drive around to get a feel.

Fwiw, I loathe Swindon itself. Blush everyone always tries to convince me that the old town is okay, but I can't get to grips with it...

Thank you. We do need to take a look around. Good to hear personal opinions of schools though. Question is - do you start with the school and then look for the house/area or the other way around? Confused

calne/chippenham direction is more reasonable house pricey.

lots of much nicer villagy types within easy commute.

do you want little village or small town?

I don't mind, as long as the countryside is in very easy reach. I gather train prices are expensive, so a drive of up to 15 miles might be preferable. That's the sort of radius we are thinking of. All suggestions welcome, and then I will have somewhere to start when I do get to look around! Thanks

You need to keep an eye on what's going on with lyneham if you go out calne way. Some v lovely areas though. Take a trip! (I would go for village first, then check school. And revise accordingly. As many times as you need to. I suspect most village primary schools will be fine out that way though, it'll be the secondary location that's the decider)

It depends how remote village-y you want to go. Also, depends on how well equipped your village needs to be. There's some very pretty places to the east of Swindon, but within easy reach for things like supermarkets and rail links, such as Wanborough, Bishopstone, Liddington and so on. However, they don't have much in the way of amenities barring a couple of good pubs.

Alternatively, if you want a village type atmosphere with a bit more to it, it could be worth you looking at Wroughton, or even Wootton Bassett.

Shrivenham is really nice but it's pricy. South Marston is a bit cheaper but again, not a great deal there beyond nice houses and pubs.

Personally, I'm not mad keen on most of the villages to the north of Swindon, like Cricklade and Purton (just personal preference), but Blunsdon and Highworth are quite nice and you'd be in catchment for a good state secondary then.

Swindon gets a lot of really bad press, and yes it's got its grotty bits, like anywhere else. However, it's actually got quite a lot going for it once you settle in and know the secret password! There's a growing number of decent places to eat, we get some decent theatre and ballet on a reasonably regular basis, there's a thriving Literature festival and open air theatre in the summer, lovely parks... we moved here 15 years ago and we've never left!

Thank you! All very encouraging! Going to do a search!

I second whatRuby Lennox says - have lived in Swindon 6 years, there are good bits and less good bits, but overall it's not so bad. Chiseldon and villages towards Marlborough are nice, but definitely on the pricey side. You can get real value for money in Swindon itself, but it's not rural! Agree about Blunsdon and Highworth as good villages, virtually in Swindon, and good state education there. Cirencester and surrounding villages only 20 mins away, but again prices much higher. Happy searching!

I wouldn't move to Calne... But lots of the villages around are fine. The two secondary schools in Chippenham seem to have good reputations. I think it depends on the age of your children but I would always be interested in the secondary schools as they seem to be more difficult to find than good primary schools. Good luck

Bethanne · 27/04/2012 09:45

Thank you. I am going to take a look soon, but am becoming more and more interested in Chippenham and have got a prospectus from two Comprehensives there. Both look good. I have children at both Primary and Secondary level, and as you say, it is harder to find good secondary schools than good primary schools.
