To clarify, they're not original but were in the house when we moved in and have probably been down about 20 years. They're not particularly well fitted, there's a trim where the skirting meets the floor which looks a bit naff and the hallway floor is slightly raised because of them. And they're just so gaudy! Red, yellow and green, but in a bright new way, not a lovely muted time-worn original way. We've got quite a big hallway so know they probably cost a fortune to put in... but I just don't like them! There's no way I could justify the cost of replacing them with a more muted palette so I'm thinking wooden flooring. It's a double fronted house so hall opens out to a room either side so I could continue the wooden flooring into those rooms too. Oh I just don't know!

Was going to say Yes you're mad - but if they're not original to the house and as you say a bit gaudy - I'd have them out in a flash - wood through the ground floor sounds much nicer.

Keep the tiles though if they come up easily - you could always sell them on / use them for something else.

Noooooo my dp wanted to cover our and I wouldn't let him. We found a fab bloke in Nottinghamshire to restore them.

He was brilliant and repaired a few like a mosaic /jigsaw rather than replacing (which would have been expensive).

When he started the cleaning process (something like 80 litres of water went though them) they became loose so ended up being a bigger job than he thought. Stil only cost £560 and our hallway is 20 foot long.

We get comments from everyone who walks in the house at how nice they look and I mean everyone. They're so hard wearing too and hide all the dirt Grin

Exactly what doradoo said!!

You read my mind Grin

If you do pull them up, even if not original, the actual tiles may be worth some money so look in to selling them on

I your circs, I would put in the wooden flooring and store the old tiles away.

OrmIrian · 27/03/2012 10:34

Ah! Just googled them and they are what we have. But ours are original in a 1930 house. But the last people carpeted them and now they are all covered in big blobs of glue Hmm Is there a finish you could give them to mute the colours a bit?

ScoobyDooWhereAreYou · 27/03/2012 10:43

Ah, hadn't thought of selling them on. That may help me persuade dh. They are immaculate really, bar a few paint splashes. We do get lots of comments on them, people generally say how lucky we are to have the original floor which makes me think that maybe they're not that bad and it's just me being pinickity but I have just taken against them and can't see past them. At the moment we've just painted the whole hall white while we try and get our head round what to do, but that's probably making it look worse - that and the forest green carpet!!

Defintiely get rid and sell them on!

Sausagedog27 · 27/03/2012 19:28

Nooooooo! I think you'd be mad to get rid! Are you certain it's not the original floor? Maybe get them relayed professionally. You might regret it!

SwedishEdith · 27/03/2012 20:04

Where are you? I want tiles for our hall. Can you post a picture of something similar or your actual ones?
