Would an American style front porch look odd on a UK house?

I'm toying with the idea of an American style front porch since my house is a bit boxy. Do you think it would look odd? Not sure I've ever seen one in this country

I would love one, but at the back.

I think that in the UK, the back is the best place for a porch if it is facing in the right direction. I got one, on the back. It faces West and I get the sundown. What I am puzzled about is, that so many people say they love it (unless they are lying) and then either put in a conservatory (they say they thought they may as well since they had put in the ground work) or just put in decking. Maybe it is an issue of ground space and adding to the property footprint, and not reducing the stated size of the garden.
I wonder if this is the curse of one wanting/ needing to increase the value of their house for resale purposes rather than making the house the way they want to live in it now.

Anyone tell me how to look at someone's profile ?

BertieBotts · 30/12/2015 10:53

We stayed in a lodge at Slaley Hall this year. It had a porch with a roof round the back and side. The living room was really dark and too cold as a result and we had to have the lights on during the day. Unless you live in a hot and sunny part of the world I wouldn't bother.

I am sad this is a zombie thread, I've become over invested in knowing whether op had the porch fitted and what her house looks like. It sounds fabulous!

Oh thanks PP and BB .PP has it ,I thought you just clicked and couldn't work ou what was wrong .
Oh I'd adore a wrap round porch .

cosypenguins · 01/01/2016 23:53

I am going to look up Slaley hall and have a look.

cosypenguins · 02/01/2016 00:01

Looked up Slaley hall. Could not see bunbakers lodge.
Has anyone suggestions of where I could see an example of this type of porch in the uk?

Bunbaker · 02/01/2016 00:10

Most of the lodges they show on their website are the 3 bedroom ones with a balcony. We stayed in a 2 bedroom bungalow like the one here. It was extremely well equipped and comfortable, but dark inside due to the roof overhang on two sides of the main living area and the dark (mostly brown) decor and furnishings. It was also huge.

Bunbaker. Thank you for posting this. I see what you mean. It even looks dark from the OUTSIDE!

Ah, that's the sort of porch you mean. I had visions of it being one of those American enclosed porches with fly screens, which would enable me to have my windows open in Summer without the pesky creatures getting in to the house. Also a covered porch would allow storage of firewood, drying homegrown onions, laundry on a clothes horse or just sit out without getting bitten. Also the roof can be see through, Perspex/glass etc. to let light in if preferred. During the heatwave a year or so back we had to put a tarpaulin over our 8ft wide south facing lounge window, it reduced the temperature inside quite a bit.
