House up for sale - Emotional!

ScarletsMum · 21/03/2012 11:30

Reassurance needed!

I was not expecting to be so emotional but as soon as the man put the For Sale sign up this morning I started welling up.

We've lived here for 11 years, so it really has been a real home for us. Two kids, marriage all living here. We do want a bigger place but I have such an attachment to our home - I love it.

Please tell me some of you were the same. I need to get a grip! It is making have second thoughts, but we really do want somewhere bigger!

Snap, Scarlet - our house also went on the market today. We've lived there for 12 years and had our 3 children there. We love our house (damn, the estate agent's photographs make it look so good!) and our neighbours but are also hoping for somewhere slightly bigger, with a garage and in catchment for a decent secondary school. I truly sympathise with you, but keep telling myself that I need to detach myself from the emotional side and try to think of the end goal.

bananasarebeautiful · 21/03/2012 11:56

I am the same-can't decide whether we should move or not (even though I want to!). Eight and a half years here.

Am currently cleaning for a viewing and as this is pure torture I guess we should go through with it if we manage to sell. (Not that we can find anywhere to buy...)

Sinkingfeeling · 21/03/2012 11:59

How long have you been on the market, bananas? I'm worried about finding somewhere to buy too - there doesn't seem to be much that fit our (quite flexible) criteria. Confused

member · 21/03/2012 11:59

I think it's normal - same happened to me about this time last year after over 13 years living in my house/marriage/babies BUT we had investigated extending etc at length AND had the house we are now in, in our sights after keeping an eye on property for aeons.

bananasarebeautiful · 21/03/2012 12:14

I think about three weeks. Fourth and fifth viewings today and tomorrow. Should be hoovering. Having panic attack instead!
Very little out there to buy.

ScarletsMum · 21/03/2012 12:19

It is a real gut wrench! I feel for you others too - but secretly glad you all feel the same, I feel like I'm on an emotional rollercoaster today. Is it too early for wine??? ;)

It only went up today, so I need to pull myself together as it may put potential buyers off if the person showing them round is snivelling mess!!

We have somewhere we want and they have agreed to our offer and are giving us to Mid-April to get an offer on ours, which is very generous of them!

Wow, that sounds good, Scarlet - we haven't looked at any properties yet. It's taken us a few months to declutter (still a long way to go) and do all the DIY jobs we needed to do. Are you showing viewers round yourself? I guess if you've already found somewhere it might be easier to focus on that, rather than on what you're giving up in your current house. I'm not sure our ideal house is out there, or not in our budget anyway, and worried we won't find anywhere as nice as the house we're in. I'm really jittery at the moment and should probably calm down - as dh says, it could take months to sell and I can't live in a state of nervous excitement all that time!

bananasarebeautiful · 21/03/2012 14:25

Viewing went well, time will tell. However my nerves are shot as the only house we wanted was sold today! Need something else to happen to take my mind off of all this palaver!

Sinkingfeeling · 21/03/2012 15:02

Oh no, bananas! How gutting. But - having been glued to glanced at Rightmove over the last few months I've seen houses 'sell' and then come back on the market a short time later, for one reason or another. Don't give up hope but look at other things as well. Glad your viewing went well. This is our first day on the market and we have a viewing booked for tomorrow and another at the weekend. Am really bricking it now!

ScarletsMum · 21/03/2012 15:12

Oh no bananas. I'm sorry. I've been obsessively glued to Right Move too and sinking is right things do come back up and there are lots of new things popping up for sale. They say Spring is when lots of people decide to sell.

I am jealous of your two viewings already. Apparently there is some malfunction with the Vebra software and our house has all the photos labelled wrong and in the wrong order online. They are "looking into it". Grrrrr!

bananasarebeautiful · 21/03/2012 15:18

Good luck guys! Am jealous you have found somewhere who will wait for you Scarlet. Annoying about mistakes though-they put up the wrong measurements for our house to begin with. How hard can it be??!!

ScarletsMum · 21/03/2012 16:01

I know we are so lucky - they are both GPs and have already bought their next house with cash!! So they can't be bothered with lots of viewings, so are happy to give us a chance. Was so happy when we heard that. Just have to sell ours though, that is the problem!

I just noticed the estate agents have called our back doors "patio doors" so I have asked them to rename them correctly to "French doors". I am sure that will make all the difference to a buyer ;), but French doors sounds so much nicer!

Sinkingfeeling · 21/03/2012 17:43

Sounds great, Scarlet - just checked our own listing and estate agents have said 'French doors', phew! Wink

Lizcat · 21/03/2012 18:36

Remember the memories are in your head not tied to the house.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 21/03/2012 18:44

Sympathise - ours is not yet on the market (too much clutter!) but we have seen a few we like near teh Dc school, and better commute for us, and so are steeling ourselves. I know when I have decluttered the house and it is lovely I will wnat to stay, but is just too small for us now...

Monica145 · 21/03/2012 19:14

Bananas, I sympathise - after a stupid amount of dithering about a house to buy (because it was smaller than we really hoped for but in good area) we decided to offer on one today, only to find someone else beat us to it!!! Gutted - been looking for ages. BUT the agent said an interesting thing - apparently when they sell in a popular area it's not unusual to hold a waiting list on the property in case the sale falls through. I have NEVER heard of this before. Worth calling the agent to get yourself top of that list, just in case?

Sinkingfeeling · 21/03/2012 20:31

Definitely worth putting yourself on a 'waiting list' with the estate agent. A friend of mine offered on a house which was viewed by four other people the same day. The vendors accepted an offer from a cash buyer, and my friend lost out. She emailed the agent politely after the viewing expressing interest and asking them to contact her if anything changed. Two weeks later they did - the cash buyer turned out to need a mortgage after all ...

bananasarebeautiful · 21/03/2012 21:51

Oh, I've already emailed her! She has promised to let me know if it falls through. Although as someone said it's nearly spring so hopefully something else will catch our eye/wallet size soon.
