En suite bathroom - bath AND shower? Twin sinks or single?

I've been putting it off and putting it off. But the time has come to renew our en suite bathroom.

Currently it has his and hers sinks (is that a bit 80s?) a large walk in shower and a huge spa bath (ugh) and a just the one karzi (phew).

Bath and shower or would just a shower suffice?
Twin sinks or one enormous beautiful sink?

The room is about 14' x 12'

Bath and shower - you miss baths when they're gone, and one big beautiful sink :)

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 21/03/2012 09:27

We made our en suite a grown up bathroom - huge walk in shower (very hotel like) and large beautiful sink, lots of storage and great gown up colours. The designer recommended two sinks but we were of the view we didnt need 2.

We have a bath in the family bathroom so we can use that if we want a bath anyway...

PigletJohn · 21/03/2012 09:47

unless you live in a prison or boarding school, multiple basins in the same room are not suitable.

Bath, shower, basin and bidet will be plenty.

Swed · 21/03/2012 10:24

Bangtastic - We do have two other baths in the house, one in the guest en suite and another in the family bathroom. But DH is keen to keep the bath. Especially as it's an enormously long one and he is v tall. I agree about 1 large beautiful sink. Thank you. Grin

dinky - Yes, I like the idea of lots of storage in place of the bath. I'm envious of your designer. Envy

Piglet - A bidet? Nooooo. But lol at prison or boarding school.

two loos for that special sharing time??

I can never decide if bidets are nice or not, a permanent dilemma that keeps me awake at nights.

JasperJohns · 21/03/2012 10:30

Bidets are very 80s! I don't think I have ever seen one in a new bathroom (work in Building Control so do a huge amount of nosing around bathrooms!)

Def separate shower and bath. I like twin sinks but they're not essential.

irregularegular · 21/03/2012 10:32

That's a big bathroom. Seems to me you should have enough space for a large shower, bath, two sinks AND plenty of storage so there isn't really a dilemma.

We have two sinks and I don't care if they are 80s or 'not suitable' or anything else ( probably depends on the style tbh) I LOVE having two sinks and would be very loathe to give them up. I always really miss them when we are in a hotel room and have to share! On the other hand, you've got two sinks so you know whether you value them or not. Maybe you don't get ready for bed at the same time.

Our sinks are in one 'unit' with loads of storage space underneath. One side each. It's more storage than we can use.

irregularegular · 21/03/2012 10:33

Not sure what you mean by an 'enormous, beautiful sink'. Picture please!

CMOTDibbler · 21/03/2012 10:38

Lovely bath, big shower, toilet, and sink on big, lovely storage unit. IMO you can never have enough storage in the en suite.

And a heated mirror.

annalouiseh · 21/03/2012 10:40

2 sinks aren't 80's if you use the right sinks and go modern with it,
Nice counter top with 2 sit on sinks
There are some real stunning double bowels out there depending how modern your going, and budget...
We just done our bathroom and got a free flow sink (no plug) and they do a double, very nice to look at and don't get all that mould and gunk off a pop up plug.

Swed · 21/03/2012 10:58

I don't want to go modern. I want restrained classics. [fiddles with twinset]

I fancy a big sink like this (this one is from Fired Earth but the one I want is from CP Hart)

large sink

Because of the way the room is, I won't be able to have much storage if I have a bath and one huge basin will take up a similar amount of space to two standard basin.

We have a huge window and because the window is low we can't really put anything in front of the window. And with the door and heated towel rails, that doesn't leave much wall space for storage.

We are desperately short of storage in the bathroom and I would really like a big walk in shower and a huge built in handpainted cupboard in the space where the bath is.

if your going classic, you can do either or on the sink side then as will look really well placed regardless

pinkje · 21/03/2012 14:03

If you have the space why not create 2 separate bathrooms, one for each of you. We created a showeroom and bathroom from the space of the old large bathroom and separate toilet. It's excellent and means we can both get ready for bed at the same time.

Swed · 21/03/2012 14:06

pinkje - It wouldn't work because there is just one big window in the room.

pinkje · 21/03/2012 20:28

We also have only one window so the shower-room borrows light from the bathroom: there is a high up window between the 2 with opaque glass. Works really well though we need an extractor fan still. There was also already a door from the master bedroom to the bathroom which helped.

I love that we have his and hers bathrooms but in reality he has his and I share mine with the children as the shower-room is effectively the main bathroom of the house.

Must say I prefer sharing with the kids!

irregularegular · 23/03/2012 13:39

Well if you're not bothered about the bath then get rid - but I still think you should have plenty of space for everything.

Storage can go under the sinks, like this: homeeleganceusa.com/shop/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/365x299/ed54a3099816366f94f73e7fc1f809d4/6/4/64601.jpg

Definitely no 'bowls on counters' - is dating very quickly, I think.

wasabipeanut · 23/03/2012 13:44

I'd lose the bath and have a stonking shower instead. I consider bidets and double sinks hideously naff. We had a big sink on metal legs put in to our renovated bathroom last year and it looks fab - retro but not old fashioned IYSWIM. It also has a useful shelf underneath.

Agree with the avoidance of bowls on counters.
