Polished granite floor - I don't like the shinyness!

Is there anything I can do about it? We have a dark grey polished granite floor in the kitchen. It was installed by the chap we bought the house from - there is nothing wrong wth it, I just don't like that shiny thing going on on the floor. Have dogs etc and just want a good stone floor that won't show the dirt etc. Someone has told me you can get the top shiny layer sanded off? Has any one seen how it looks after this has been done?

there is a power tool used for grinding and polishing concrete floors. I suppose you could use the coarse or medium grinder without going on to the fine polishing stage.

It is possible to hire them but if you can find a local flooring contractor who does the work, I doubt it would take more than half a day for what you want. A skilled worker would probably know how to just take the shine off and hopefully not leave circuloar marks on the floor..

It makes a lot of slurry (if used wet) that will turn into dust.

you will want to take the plinths/kick boards off the kitchen units, and remove what appliances you can.

Or you could try just not polishing it for a bit. Washing a stone floor with Flash seems to take the shine off.

I'm not sure about taking the shine off the surface. We have stone floors at work, and they stain horribly, especially in food areas, despite having been repeatedly sealed. We're on the point of having to buy a special machine at vast cost to clean the expensive stone floors that no-one wanted in the first place (new addition to listed building, don't ask!)

I'd stick with your current floors and see how they work longer term. I'd guess the last thing you want is stained floors in your kichen.

Hmm, perhaps I should consult a professional! I don't care about them looking a bit tattty, tbh they are going to have spaniels and muddy boots etc on them anyway :-) The shinyness doesn't go with everything else in that kitchen!

Could you put some washable rugs or mats down? Do you have turtle mats for the muddy dogs?

We have a large carpetty rug type thing, but it is so slippy, due to extreme shinyness! :) Also, then the wretched rugs are another thing to clean, instead of just running a broom or mop over a hard floor! I have been looking online and rad loks of encouraging articles about how easily it can dull, lol

you can get a sort of rubbery mesh thing that goes under the rug to make it grip on shiny floors. I don't know the trade name.

Thanks Piglet. I think I will try Flash and see if it dulls ;-)

I know you can buy worktops that are shiny or "honed". Maybe go to a granite worktop place and have a chat about it to them.
