ARGH! 20 year old lino glue!

I'm just taking a break from unexpectedly ripping up my kitchen floor. I discovered on Sundays that the bunny has been at the oven cable so replacing the kickboards, which I've been meaning to do since I moved in and renovated 7 years ago Blush, suddenly became top of the list. Except they were too wide so I took up some of the carpet tiles. Still too wide so I took a wallpaper scraper to the two layers of 80's lino and now have no floor in my kitchen...

Now I have a grotty black floor covered in a manky layer of old contact adhesive. Please, clever Mumsnetters, how do I clean it before I put new lino down?

Thanks

I had the same problem with carpet adhesive and received the brilliant tip of WD40. Use one of those spray cans. Spray it over the lino adhesive, let it soak in for 10-20 mins, then scrape it the glue up.
Worked like a dream for me.

Thank you Thanks

Will I need to keep the animals out while it soaks in? And will it be OK for them to walk on afterwards while I sort out the new flooring? I haven't ordered or bought it yet due to lack of storage space so there could be a few days between finishing scraping and laying new...

Not sure about the animal situation - I think WD40's oily smell is quite off-putting t critters so I wouldn't expect them to want to lick it and the fumes are not dangerous/very mild.
The glue comes up pretty quickly with the oil - I was able to do a couple of rooms in an afternoon with two large aerosols of WD40 (about £5-£10) and a wallpaper/paint scraper.
You might need to wash the floor afterwards to remove any oil traces if you are sticking down the new lino.

I would think it's ok to walk on - depends how much residue is left - you wouldn't want to slip or walk it through the rest of the house.

According to my Dad DIY guru WD40 is basically fish oil so it'll stink but not cause problems to sensitive furry noses Grin

Thanks
