i have recently moved into a property and in pretty much every room there is an air vent in the wall leading to outside, its a pretty old house was built for the mining community. we also live near the M1 and we cant hear it except through these vents and it is disturbing my DS sleep.
my DP has covered it with duck tape and as u can imagine it does not look attractive.
does anyone know if you can by special covers for them? or any other tips to help?

thanks in advance

hi iowmum88...
we've got the same vents in our lounge, and they let in loads of cold air.. (has been doing my head in!). i've been pleading with hubby to do something about it.. but, he said no... old houses need ventilation!!! i've dropped it now, due to the weather warming up a bit./// i've been a major nag this past few months with the cold weather.... our first winter in our 'period' house!

sorry i can't offer any useful advice, other than maybe stuff tissue in the holes to make it look a bit prettier as a temporary measure.

hope you get things sorted...x

all houses need ventilation. If you have blocked up your fireplaces and fitted plastic windows, it will need it all the more.

What do your vents look like? Inside and out?

iowmum88 · 07/03/2012 17:44

Not sure how to describe them really they are plastic inside with like slats across. Not sure outside haven't really looked. I'm not bothered about the draft just the noise in my sons bedroom and in another room which will be my babys nursery.

if they're plastic you can probably fit a plastic hit-and-miss vent which is likely to be the same size (measure the old one) and will stop the draught but not have much effect on the noise.

There is a fitting used on sound-proofed houses near motorways but I don't know a source.
