Broken firestone (stone slab at back of open fire)

We've tried glueing it but the glue wasn't as heat proof as promised and it's broken again, leaving a massive hole at the back of the fire (so half the flames are out of sight).

It's a little Victorian fireplace and the firestone (I think that's the right name, not sure) is a pretty specific fit - anyone got any idea where I could get a replacement for not too much ££? Am in SE London/Kent btw. Thanks for your help/ideas.

That sounds dangerous. You can get fireproof cement that would maybe do for a short term fix.

It's fireproof cement we used, barb, but yeah, short term it was.

I don't think it's dangerous at all (thanks for your concern though), the chimney's fine, it's just very wasteful as it draws incredibly fast. We only light fires very occasionally, a wintry treat, so maybe we just need to accept we'll need the cement every few times.

Think they are called firebricks.

I found this site which looks like it does them made to measure?

Thanks minipie, that's brilliant.

We had the same problem in our old house and the chimney sweep advised us that it wasn't dangerous.

Smile happy to help

I can imagine it will be a bit of a pain trying to get the new one in though - not sure whether it can be done without taking the whole fireplace away from the wall. Worth asking before you buy a replacement.

It's loose, it just rests at the back, though it is shaped, and varies in thickness. Looks like it'll cost about £20 though, which is worth a go for us, so thanks again.
