Very excited to be getting a new kitchen, but feeling a bit clueless on appliances

We are finally having our new kitchen delivered in 2 weeks time! We've gone for a cream gloss, handleless one with Quartz worktops. Currently thinking of unsui for the quartz, but I want to check the sample against the kitchen once it's in situ before making the final decision.

Also planning a lime green glass splashback for an accent colour.

So far, so stressed! We still need to decide on appliances too. Can anyone recommend a double oven and gas hob? We currently have Smeg and I wouldn't have that make again.

I'd love to hear your experiences/ideas!

Sorry I can't recommend a double oven - haven't had one myself.

The last kitchen appliance I bought that I think is brilliant everyday I use it is a Dualit toaster.

And we've got a lime green boden kettle which cheers me up most days and might go with your splashback.

And I'm watching the thread in case anyone mentions microwaves - which I realise is probably quite far down on your list - but something we need!

There's a lot to be said for dual-fuel cookers. A gas hob and electric oven gives the best of both worlds. In the Which tests the Cannon and the Hotpoint scored very high and were the best buys, unsurprisingly as apparently they are made in the same factory with cosmetic differences

Though if you get a double oven make sure at least one of them is really big.

I am strongly in favour of free-standing appliances not integrated ones, as they are better VFM and much easier to roll in and out when they need to be changed or mended. Have a socket behind the appliance with a switch on the wall above (except for hobs where it must be to one side because of chip-pan fires)

I had neff in my last house and everything was great esp the oven When I move this time I will be getting the same again

fresh · 04/03/2012 12:11

Have also had Neff; bought for first house in 1982 and used them in every house since!

fresh · 04/03/2012 12:12

Hasten to say, we haven't carted the same ovens around for thirty years...Blush

I would look at the Neff / Bosch Siemans, all made by the same company.
All products are made to the same quality just carrying the different name badge and design style with minimal differences.
We have 2 Bosch single ovens, had the same in the last house also and cant fault them.
Others to look at could be CDA, they come standard with 5yrs parts and 2yrs labour so no need to extend warranties (what you shouldn't really do anyway) also the CDA gas hobs are rather stylish from the standard, yet the best looking ones cost a few quid.

We've got an AEG 5 burner hob and a Belling double oven and they are both very good.

fresh · 04/03/2012 13:51

The CDA long guarantee is good, but after the 5 yrs/2 yrs guarantee runs out it's a nightmare to get things fixed. We had a dishwasher and had great service until after the guarantee ran out, when they were useless. Gave up in the end, bought a Siemens dishwasher instead.

HandMadeTail · 04/03/2012 13:51

We have two Siemens ovens. The top one is smaller and it a combination of microwave, oven and grill. The bottom one is a normal fan oven.

I find this combination is very useful.

Just get the best you can afford, and if there is an extended warranty promotion, then that would be a good one to choose. We got a 10 year free parts and labour warranty on our Miele washing machine. It got a leak after 9 years, and the chap who fixed it said it had done the average number of cycles for 20 years.

Wow - thanks for all the replies Smile. Good to see a couple of recommendations for Neff, as I wondered about those.

We are going for an integrated double electric oven, and a gas hob fitted into our island.

We do also need a new microwave as we're having that built into an alcove behind our sink. Our current microwave is ancient!

Thanks for the tip on the extended warranty too, I'll definitely look into that.

It's all getting very real now, as the kitchen is arriving in 2 weeks time! I'm beginning to panice that it's going to be horrid. So difficult to imagine how everything is going to look together. I haven't even started to think about flooring yet...

did you not get a CAD drawing of your kitchen for how it would look?

Hope it all goes well for you

PigletJohn · 04/03/2012 18:08

what is CDA?

I have seen some of those polyfunctional ovens with fan/grill and microwave, they seem handy as a second oven, provided they are oven-sized not microwave-sized, but surprisingly expensive.

I looked up Neff, and see that Gaggenau is also a brand in the Bosch Siemens Household Appliances joint venture, so I'm sure will be very reliable.

fresh · 04/03/2012 19:18

Piglet, CDA is a brand name. Tend to be sold thru independents.

Likeaninjanow, have a look to see if you could have a single oven and a combination microwave instead of a built-in double. Then you wouldn't need a separate microwave. Can recommend the Neff one, but Piglet is right, they are eyewateringly expensive and often require a very heavy power feed, not just a 13amp socket. But really useful.

Likeaninjanow · 04/03/2012 19:39

We didn't get a CAD drawing as we're doing it ourselves, with the help of my dad (builder). We're keeping the same layout we have, just replacing everything with new. The layout works so well, I don't see how I could improve it.

That does sound interesting about the oven/microwave combo though. I'll look into those, thanks!

What did you decide on in the end? We are in the same situation in that we cannot improve the layout of the kitchen anymore but really need a new under oven/hob combo. Thought I wanted a range but choices are confusing me!
