Removing upvc doors and frames when moving?

We've been living in our current house for 15+ years and I'm just about to put an offer in on a new place. I want to hire a removal firm to do everything.

I understand that this won't be cheap, but I hate moving. I moved 5 times in two years before I bought this place and the memories of carting my worldy goods strapped to the top of my Ford Fiesta still give me the shivers.

We fitted a new UPVC door to the storm porch on the front of the house couple of years ago and now the piano and couple of the sofas will not fit through that doorway. It is the only exit, we don't have side or back access.

Do removal firms like Pickfords or similar remove UPVC door frames to get things out, or would they organise a fitter to do it? Could I just go away for a couple of days to a nice hotel and come back and everything would be done?

Does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks!

I know people who have taken the doors with them Hmm ...

Sorry I can't help with your problem. No idea.

I would imagine you'd need to organise a fitter to do it. Or perhaps remove a window instead.

QuintessentialyHollow · 27/02/2012 18:29

No clue, but this reminds me of when we bought our first house. Dh asked the vendors (I kid you not)
Are you taking the windows with you or will you leave them behind?
They looked at eachother, and the man said "erm, we were planning on leaving the windows in" to which my hapless husband replied
"oh, that is very kind of you"

They must have thought we were stoned or something.

The larger firms will have a "pack your whole house" service so you can leave them to it. When you get a quote ask them about the door, they will have dealt with this loads of times before.

Removal firms are usually very experienced in getting things out but the safest thing to do is ask when they come to do the initial survey.

Tips (from someone who has moved far too many times!):

De-clutter
De-clutter
And then do it again
Be ruthless

Then tidy and clean every room

Mentally figure out where you want things to go and label them

Have emergency box ready - kettle etc.

Good luck!

I've had pickfords round today for a quote. Basically, they recommend hiring a 'handy man' through them, for the day - she said the cost was around £150 + vat (but not had that in writing yet) and the would do exactly this sort of thing. They would also take down curtains if needed, unplug washing machine (because they are qualified plumbers unlike the removal men) and come with you to your new place and do pre-specified and ad-hoc jobs at the new place too.

That said, I have Also had a local, but big, firm round, and these sorts of jobs that Pickfords were saying needed to e covered by an additional handy man would in fact just be done by the removal men themselves (at a cost presumably, but all included in the overall total).

The upshot, I think, is that yes you can definitely arrange for the removal company to do all these sorts of things for you, they just have different ways of achieving them (and some outsource).

We are moving 3 weeks post c-section with dc3 so I have said to both firms who came to do a quote that I am ready and willing to pay them to do anything and everything that needs doing :)

Good luck!

This has made me feel much more positive, I really couldn't bare the thought of organising everything, working full time and looking after the baby and the pets. Now I'm thinking it could be done with the minimum of fuss!

I thought you were going to ask if you could take the doors too! I thought: oo-er, she's going to get slaughtered Grin

omg - I clicked on here as well thinking you meant you were going to take them with you when you moved. (its late and I'm tired )
