Any recommendations on where to go to buy a sofa. We want something classic, good quality, but not vastly expensive? We are in Northants area.

sofa.com (though you would have to pay for delivery).
They refund if it's the wrong size/ unsuitable.

If youre in south northants there's a company that used to be in westbury but has moved a few miles that will make up sofas exactly as you want them - for about the same price as going somewhere like multiyork or John Lewis or m&s.

I've been looking for sofas for several years (dh thinks I am too fussy!) as I know what I want but haven't been able to find it. Most sofas these days when you sit in them are pretty uncomfortable. Or ugly. Or both.

Best I found were in multiyork but they had rounded arms and I wanted straight. Other places I looked in were:
John Lewis
M&s
Ikea
Furniture village
Debenhams

All the above are in milton Keynes.

Others were Bennetts in Banbury, Lucas in Aylesbury, heals and most of tottenham court road in London.

Will look out the name of the ex westbury chap for you - think I am going to use them myself.

Thanks Zipzap!

I'm pretty fussy about sofas too. Was very unimpressed with John Lewis' offerings last week. They were expensive and not one of the ones on display was comfortable, and some looked downright shabby after lots of sitting on.

Our last sofa was from M&S and although it is 11yrs old is still looking good and is sooooo comfy. We've just moved to a bigger house and have the luxury of an additional living room/snug which we need to get a sofa for. It's an old farmhouse so need something traditional, but even M&S seems to have gone all minimal and modern with their sofas.

Has anyone got sofas from Laura Ashley? They seem very expensive, and the one they had in the small store I went into was not comfy at all!

Hi Zeeky

My sis and some friends have M&S sofas that are good but since I have been looking to buy a sofa the last few years the new ones really seem to have gone downhill - comfort wise at any rate - they seem like they are using cheaper springs and fillings :( ditto most of the ones in places like john Lewis and laura Ashley etc

There were some comfy sofas in Multiyork - I found this one comfy but I liked the look of this one

But the one I liked the look of wasn't quite high enough for me to rest my head on or deep enough whereas the other one was - but I didn't want curly arms that took up lots of space. And whilst they say that sofas can be tweaked to change both these things it was never on the designs I wanted!

If you do want their stuff, don't buy if the sale isn't on - there is frequently a sale on - usually for about 30-40% and occasionally for 50% - think they just have enough 'off sale' time to comply with the law IYSWIM so think of their sale prices as their real prices and the other prices as a bonus for them...

www.kraftupholstery.co.uk - is the place I mentioned previously. They were really friendly and knew their stuff. I think they basically do a price 'per half seat' of a sofa - and I think a full seat is 20 inches. So if you wanted a 3 seat sofa that would be between 51 and 60 inches wide, a 3.5 seat sofa would be anything between 61 and 70 inches wide, a 4 seater would be anything between 71 and 80 inches wide etc. And then you just pay a per metre charge for the fabric they use to cover it.

plus you get to choose the style of all the different aspects of the sofa - back height, seat depth, pitch of the back, arm style, fabric obviously, piping or not, different positions the seams can be (around the arms - I'd never really thought about it before) - you name it, you can say up a bit, down a bit, seam here not there etc. If you ask for something that wouldn't work they would tell you though obviously! and have lots of stuff in the showroom that you can try out to get different ideas. Then have the arms from this sofa, the filling from that one, the seat depth from here, etc etc. They also have loads of fabrics to choose from - collection books from loads of places both well known and others that are more 'trade' - they were also happy to point out the ones that were significantly cheaper 'trade' fabrics but made by the same people as some of the big names where you pay in part for the name. And particularly if you are going for a plainer fabric (rather than an obvious Romo or Sanderson etc pattern for example) then you can cut the cost of the fabric in half or more for the same quality.

I'll stop there. I can bore for England on sofas - or rather the lack of comfy ones available in the shops these days but shout if you think of anything else - I've been to most places selling sofas around MK, Northampton, Buckingham, Bicester, Brackley as well as plenty of the london places. DH reckons I have wasted far too much of my life looking for sofas - if it was up to him he would have just popped into argos and done eeny meeny miny moe Grin and then complained for years about how badly they have worn and how uncomfortable they are!

As you can tell I haven't let him do this so we are still sitting on our old sofas Grin But one day I will get the sofas I want (slightly complicated by the fact I also need to choose curtains and no point getting sofa until I get curtains as it might be the wrong colour, easier to get a plain sofa in any colour to match the curtains... But at least I know now where I am aiming to get my sofas from!

Zeeky · 27/02/2012 14:14

Zipzap I'm totally with you. A sofa HAS to have a high enough back so that you can rest your head on it (what is with all these low backed sofas??). I am faily tall and find that a lot of sofas aren't deep enough for me - I want the seat to come right to the back of my knees. They seem to make them all for very short people!

Will def look at Multiyork. We looked there when buying our last sofa, but found them very expensive (must have been no sale on!), and got the M&S one on a special offer. Will also look at kraftupholstery - they sound excellent!

My sofas are from Next, and they are fab. Comfy, look great after 2 years of heavy bouncing (DC and dog) and wipe down easily. I love them.

privateplane · 28/02/2012 19:50

Divani- excellent quality

FlatCapAndAWhippet · 28/02/2012 20:11

mine are from Laura Ashley, lovely looking, brown antique leather, brass ball and claw feet, really pleased with them 6 months on but hell they were not at all comfortable to begin with. The one in the shop was very comfortable but had obviously seen a lot of bottoms upon it! Grin

Apparently one of the reasons that low backed sofas are in is because as houses and doorways/access are getting smaller, it is much easier to get a low backed sofa in than a high backed one - which might need to be taken in in sections or through a french window/patio door etc.

plus once in the room they don't make it seem as cluttered as ceilings are so much lower than they used to be so this way there is a kind of false impression of height given as the brain doesn't spot it and just kind of does a mental adjustment that re-proportions the room (or at least it would until somebody stands in it and you can see it is not a nice high sofa and high ceiling but low for both.

Plus they are cheaper to make as need less materials so it is easier to stick a bigger mark up on them and make a bigger profit.

Me, Cynical? never... Grin

I am completely amazed by how difficult it is to buy a comfortable sofa though!
