Hi - have moved into new house, redecorating ongoing. basically in living room there is a chimney breast, directly opposite entrance to living room, is only place in room where a picture/art could be hung (one wall is windows, others are cupboards shelves etc) so I need to choose something that is:
-sophisticated (i.e not 'keep calm, carry on' poster)
-inkeeping with colour scheme of aubergine/neutrals
-speaks for itself - we have room for one biggy only
any advice? Not ikea/john lewis/next - something else - but doesn't cost fortune

thanks

We got a picture that we bought at a garden centre - it is on our "terracotta" coloured wall and is a lovely cream mounted pic- of 3 Victorian front doors with summery gardens - we both saw it at the same time and said - that would look nice above the fire.... so I would say watch out in the posher garden centres, we would never have thought of going there for "art".

TK Maxx often have "artwork" some is a bit tacky, occasionally something rather tasteful...

Ebay is good as well.

I got a gem in a charity shop, oil painting of a distinguished looking victorian gent, £15. We pretend it is an ancestor!

Have you got a nice photo that means something to you that you could blow up onto a canvas? It's getting cheaper and cheaper to do it...

There's Bucks Open Sudios, Herts Open Studios and Somerset Art Week. I'm sure other counties/areas do similar. Have a google when the're on and go to your local library nearer the time for a booklet of artists involved. it's usually individuals who work from home or in studio set up. They'll be everything from fine art, ceramics, textiles, sculpture etc... Much much cheaper than gallery prices. You could even have something commissioned. It doesn't have to cost an arm or leg for something really lovely.

If you're in/near London, try The Affordable Art Fair which is on in Battersea mid March.

Try either etsy or notonthehighstreet - both do one-off artworks and some of the listers will also do commissions.

There's an artist I've been getting into recently called William Scott.

He's ace.

I came across some 60s/70s lithographs by him and just had to have one.

Unfortunately, they cost around 2 grand, so I couldn't!

I don't think his family like things being too commercial, so you can't really buy much stuff of his as poster art - certainly not his best works - but try these

Or these

If not, similar is Mary Fedden...she has some lovely work, but again, difficult to find as posters.
