I have to choose new ones and I have no idea what people have.

House is about 35 years old and we're hoping to modernise the downstairs.

Thank you!

This shape painted white, standard new build fodder.

These are what we put in a house we built a few years ago. I really liked them Smile

The second ones I put there were a bit nicer than that but thats the gist of them!

I wouldn't advise doors with glass, bloody finger prints grr

oreocrumbs, that is very helpful, thank you.

So you'd paint them white gloss? (i've never given a second thought to doors before so am very ignorant!)

No I wouldn't paint them given the choice, the ones I have are the way they came when I got the house. When we did our own we put solid wood and varnished them, the same with the skirtings and door frames (not sure if you have a choice about them). Apart from the look, the fact that when you decorate you don't have to gloss the paintwork was a major factor in that decision.

I suppose it depends on how much you want to spend, I imagine my doors are dirt cheap wood and MDF. The solid wood ones are expensive, I suppose there is a middle ground as well.

There are some nice oak doors here. Reasonably priced.

tassisssss · 21/02/2012 21:34

oh man, so oak or painted, I have no idea! New skirting boards etc going in too so open to either...

What does everyone else have?

Thanks for helping folks, appreciating it a lot.

I find a lot of modern doors feel too light and flimsy. Do other people find that?

Perhaps that's because I'm used to an old house, and I prefer a solid-feeling panelled door. The heavier door is also better at blocking noise.

We have all the original doors in our apartment (b. 1929). The hall is quite long - 6m by 2.5m, with an additional back hall about 1.2m deep at the far end, opposite the front door (which is in a short side). The halls have no natural light but on the left hand side there is one double door and two single doors leading to the reception rooms and they are glass doors, each with three square panels of glass (typical Art Deco Style). Lots of light comes through these doors as the receptions rooms have huge windows, and additional glass doors (same style) between them. The doors on the right hand side of the hall are solid and lead to functional spaces (coat cupboard, utility room, kitchen).

I am completely enamoured of glass doors for the light that circulates. The only downside is that they do need cleaning very frequently to look nice!
