Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon

My husband and I live in Hilperton on the edge of Trowbridge. We've lived there about year but now have to move as our rented house is being put up for sale. We are taking this opportunity to think about buying a house locally. However, we would be wanting to start a famiyl very soon and so our children would have their childhood wherever we move to. I have heard good things about the schools in Bradford on Avon compared to Trowbridge so we are thinking we will try to move there.

Are there any mums who can give us an insight into what the schools are like (state, not private) in Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge and Hilperton?

Also, we are looking for general insight into what it's like for kids in terms of safety and facilities, and also having other 'good' kids to hang about with. Both my husband and I grew up in rough areas where our schools and streets were infiltrated by kids who were a bad influence so we feel strongly that we want to avoid this for our own kids.

Are there any areas to avoid?

Any suggestions and feeback welconme as we are not from the area originally and so don't have the insight.

You'll be more likely to find what you want in Bradford, although the prices reflect this. 2 good primary schools in the town, plus 2 more in villages within 2/3 miles. Very good secondary school, with lots of kids from Trowbidge who travel over.

Both towns have train stations to Bath, though BoA is closer (10 mins to Bath). BoA has higher proportion of retired people, and Trowbridge has more shops, pubs, etc. BoA has good community feel, loads of interest groups and is generally just prettier! Although the traffic thru centre of town is busy in both towns, it seems worse in BoA because of narrow streets.

Housing stock is varied, loads of pretty Georgian houses (££££), but also lots of 20th century stock. Big new development in centre of town, although personally I think the flats are poky inside.

BoA is the more upmarket choice with fewer of the issues you mention, but Trowbridge has more facilities. You pays your money and takes your choice.....

Thanks. That's most helpful. I have to admit we've been looking at property prices in BoA and are really shocked! It's very pricey indeed. Still, it genuinely seems to be worth it if we can ever manage to save a big enough deposit!

We are also now thinking about Frome as well though it's a bit more of a commute. I will probably start a similar post to get insight about Frome too!

Can't help you with schools info, but Frome has parts like Bradford and parts like Trowbridge. Sections of pure yummymummy shops and sections with Greggs and Argos - within half a mile of each other! But it also has a great arts/music community, and lots of older properties if that's your thing. Property will be cheaper than Bradford as it's farther from Bath, but it's definitely worth a look. Good luck, and if you want any more detailed info on Bradford, PM me Smile
