Dressing room: shoe storage

Come help me create my dream dressing room with proper shoe-storage (yay!) I am thinking of a custom-made shoe cabinet in the alcove by the fireplace - and on a tight budget!

How much in your view would such shoe storage cost? I am thinking full-height doors flush with the chimney-breast, sloping shelves for the shoes plus the top of the cabinet. MDF or wood, to be painted. Possibly some cornicing or moulds.

Should I just look for a local joiner in the yellow pages or you can recommend someone?

Also, what is the best way of storing high boots? Currently they just lie in boxes but perhaps I should have them standing, stuffed with those cardboard or plastic moulds to keep shape?

I appreciate your insights.

Your ideas sound good.
High boots could go at the bottom with boot trees in them,
Cant recommend anyone to do the work if we dont know where you live though!!

I don't think you're allowed to advertise on this forums, you have to go in the classified section - see also this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/1402622-Planning-a-playroom

Thank you Panacotta. I live in London and would be grateful for references of joiners or firms who could do something like this.

Billyandcharlie - thank you for the link. The wardrobe looks beautiful indeed but I suspect is more expensive than I am prepared to pay. The wood need not be particularly beautiful - I am planning to paint it, most likely with stylised art deco details to echo the ebonised wardrobe that is already in the room.

Sorry I dont live anywhere near you so cant give any recommendations.
Ask friends/family and see if you can get any that way.
I think if you have the doors made from mdf it shouldnt cost too much.

This site is American but is great for inspiration, have a look at the dressing rooms here for ideas

What part of London are you in? I know someone who can do built in cupboards?

Pannacotta · 19/02/2012 11:53

Is this the sort of thing you were thinking of?

Horsetowater - I am in Herne Hill (SE London).

Pannacotta - it's an interesting arrangement but I was thinking of something more straightforward, using the alcoves on the sides of the fireplace, where one would often have bookcases. In fact, these shoe-cabinets will be quite similar to bookcases except possibly with sloped shelves.
