Newish Baxi Boilers - any experience?

We are putting in a new boiler, choosing between either a good local plumber, who only installs Baxi and has quoted for a Platinum 24, or a bigger company, which has quoted for Glowworm Ultracom 30. The bigger company is only about £400 more expensive. They would also quote for a Vaillant, obviously quote would be higher. (We know we probably need a 28 or 30, so will sort that).

Inclination is towards local plumber BUT some of the reviews of Baxi are poor, eg Which 2011 it came lowest in user ratings for reliability. But then in 2008 it was best (Which again!) I am going round in circles. If you type Baxi into google you just get anecdotal bad stories..... but who bothers to type good stories?

So - does anyone have a recent Baxi and what is your experience of it? Thank you in the hope that I can make a sensible decision..... Confused

Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, get a Worcester Bosch one. They put Baxis in new build houses because they're cheap and they need replacing after 10 years.

OH is a plumber, and he recommends the Baxi over the Glowworm. He wouldnt touch Glowworm with the proverbial barge pole. As Happy says Worcester Bosch are good, as are Vaillant. HTH.

Thanks camel and zero, looks like I need to acquire a bargepole....! Bumping for anyone who actually has a Baxi!

Now think I need to get a third quote - sigh.

Vaillant and Worcester-Bosch are considered quite good.

I got a Viessmann.

If you go on the manufacturers' websites they (ought to) have a register of approved installers, who are ones that have been on their short, free training scheme. A good start is to find an approved installer who is near you. When phoning, ask "do you repair XXXXX (make) of boilers?" because you want someone who knows how to service them, not just bung it on the wall and run off.

Obviously the installer must be Gas Safe Registered. Ask to see his ID card (with name and photo). If he claims to left it at home, or in the van, ask him to go and get it. Or look it up on the web so you can see his photo.

I had a back put in new in my old house and would never ever do so again. We got a bad one and the hassle I went through was unbelievable. Their customer service was dire., they would say they would get someome to phone back andbthe ignore me, they would send idiots out to look at it time after time, all starting from scratch and none of them knowing what to do, they would not turn up at 4pm as their shift was to finish at 5 even though i was 8 months preg in feb with no heat.....I eventually got it resolved by getting the directors involved after many many weeks, emails and visits.
I have since had a worcester Bosch and valiant put in and have only positive things to say about both.
Spend more money and go for one of these.. I can't even bear to hear the word baxi without starting to stress!!

IPad predictive text!! Sure you can work out I don't like baxi!!

iloverhubarb · 17/02/2012 22:25

O good lord Inti! Right think consensus is Worcester Bosch. Quick google says they are not even more expensive than Baxi.

I discussed concerns with our plumber, he says he is happy to install W B if we prefer - after all. So now just abit more research on WB approved installers, and one more quote booked for Monday. Feel things looking abit clearer, so thanks all.

Def not baxi or glowworm - although I believe glow-worm is now owned by vaillant anyway.

Just check out the local plumber really knows his stuff. Why is he quoting you for a 24 when you need 30, is what I wondered?
