Cobham, Oxshott and Esher - traffic, housing and commute

Hi all,

My partner and I are looking to move to either Cobham, Oxshott or Esher. I am finding there is a lot less choice for housing in Esher but as I work in London it offers the best commute.

I would be really interested to hear what the traffic is like in the morning around Cobham/Oxshott/Esher? We were looking at maybe living in the centre of Cobham and then driving to Oxshott station or living in outside one of the villages/towns and driving in.

Any info on what these areas are like for housing, travel and community would be much apprieciated.

Thanks,
Z

Why would you live in Cobham and then drive to Oxshot, why not catch the train at Cobham? It's the same line.
Oxshot is mainly very expensive, so is Cobham to some extent. Esther can refer to quite a large area, from the race track to the other side of the A3.

They are all v expensive places to buy.

In my opinion, a walk to the station is much better than a drive, 'cos the Esher / Oxshott spaces go early and are very expensive if you use the station car park.

Claygate would be a very good place to look: it abuts Esher but is much more village-y and you get more for your money; it has good independent shops, and though the trains are a little slower than the Esher ones, they aren't bad. You always have the option of getting off at Surbiton (hugely fast, frequent trains) and getting on the K3 bus from Surbiton station which stops at several places in Claygate.

Thanks for coming back to me.

The reason I was thinking that is because we might be looking at a place in north Cobham and so it would be as close to Oxshott station but wasn't sure what the roads would be like in the morning at rush hour.

As for Esher we were thinking near the station ideally. We could all around the Esher area if the traffic wasn't too bad as we would just drive to Esher station.

AChristmasCarole - I looked at Claygate as an option actually because you seem to get more for your money there.

I don't suppose you know what the trains are like from Claygate/Esher. Has the train filled up quite a bit by the time you get on or is there a chance of getting a seat?

If you are considering Esher Station you should look at houses in Weston Green. Weston Green/Thames Ditton has always had more of a community feel than Oxshott or Esher.

AChristmasCarole · 09/02/2012 12:33

Zeth - Claygate and Esher are about the same trainwise. You will generally get a seat in my experience, but then I/dh have always set out quite early. He is on the train by 7.15 at the latest (I am at home with the kids at the moment).

The houses near the station at Esher are quite good value, and as Lilymaid says, you could walk from Weston Green across the Common to Esher station.

The Dane's Hill morning school run does tend to bugger up Oxshott completely

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 25/02/2012 02:08

isn"t Cobham known as "Chealsea football club(players)village? No disrespect by the way i"ve been there several times and am knocked out by it"s beauty!

noddyholder · 25/02/2012 10:44

My parents lived in oxshott until very recently and it is very boring for teenagers so be prepared to spend a lot of time in teh car!

Zeth · 07/03/2012 15:32

Thanks for everyones help - We looked at a place between Esher train station and Cobham that looked pretty good. What is the A307 like in the morning going to Esher station.

I would be about 3 miles drive so it could be 10 mins if that road was quiet.

Any idea how long it would roughly take

All the roads round there are hellish in evening rush hour and my parents say morning is no better - the main road through Esher can take 45 min to get down at 5pm, ditto the junctions/A roads by Seven Hills Road. But other roads are quieter. I'd avoid having to drive to Oxshott station.

Probably only likely to get a seat in morning rush hour from Cobham, though Esher is possible.

Hi Zeth,

Old thread but in the situation as you and wondered if you could advise me on the commute, driving to train station, parking at station and getting a seat on the train?

Same areas as you, Esher, Cobham, Thames Ditton and Hampton Court.

Thanks so much.

specialsubject · 30/08/2013 10:15

replying even though old thread as there is a new question.

I moved away from the area about a year or so ago for financial reasons, not because it isn't a good place!

Hampton Court - you will get a seat there, 40 mins to Waterloo. They sometimes hold the trains at Surbiton so you can change to a faster one, or get a faster one coming home and then change at Surbiton. Have a look at Molesey - a West Molesey postcode drops the house price but parts of it are still very naice (and parts are not). You can still be within 20 mins walk of the station.

Thames Ditton - you should also get a seat. Mayhem starts at Surbiton.

the whole area is VERY busy morning, evening and afternoon school run, and a problem on the M25 or A3 will seize Cobham and Esher solid. If you are commuting you want to try hard to be walking or cycling distance to the station.

remember that both Cobham and Esher stations are away from the town centres.

Venus05 · 30/08/2013 22:17

Thanks so much, that was very helpful

If you're not far there is of course also the option of driving to Surbiton station which is easy if you're not far. e.g. Surbiton side of Scilly Isles or in TD. But parking is exxy. The Surbiton fast train is excellent though and a good one to pick up if you can switch onto it and are happy to stand.

I tend to use TD station when I have time and in the day time but sometimes on a night out go back to Surbiton and get a taxi. It's useful as there are so many more trains than on the HC line.
