Quote for fitting new bathroom - does it sound right?

I would be very grateful if someone could have a quick look at this breakdown for fitting our new bathroom. It is the first quote we've had and the bloke seems a decent enough fella - he would be doing all the work himself. We are supplying the suite, radiator, tiles and bathroom cabinet ourselves.

  • Removal of old suite, radiator etc
  • Stripping tiled walls back to brick and re-doing them properly by drylining
  • Fitting a false ceiling thing with downlights
  • putting false wall in to house shower workings
  • installing new suite (inc. swapping toilet and sink over, position-wise and altering taps on bath - ie. from one end to the other)
  • Fitting electric shower over bath
  • Fitting tall towel radiator wotsit
  • Fitting cabinet to wall and wiring up to electrics (has lights and shaver point)
  • Tiling walls (from floor to ceiling) and floors inc relaying boards properly under tiles on floor.

Quote is £2800 and he reckons it'll take about 2 weeks.

I was expecting a fair bit less money and slightly less time!

We are in the northwest. If you are stripping back to brick then are these the sort of prices I'll have to pay? I don't want to spoil the look of the whole thing by cost-cutting on say, the ceiling which is currently a right mess. We couldn't just paint over it if we wanted it to look decent.

Will this include replastering any surfaces, e.g., the ceiling?

Sounds okish, although a bit on the higher side. But then, he has including some materials. Can you ask him to clearly separate the material and labour costs, so you can compare?

We have been getting quotes to redo our bathroom in Scotland. Tesco quoted £7k! Yah, right! We got a more reasonable quote of £1700 (not including suite, but includes tiling and electrics) but I have not really been convinced - think the guys whom I contacted through Gumtree may be a bit of a cowboy outfit.

Some of you seem to have gotten a good price with reliable plumbers. Are any of you in Scotland, and could you please, please share the plumber contact Grin

Yeah, *clownsarescary", it includes removal of all rubbish/old stuff etc.

If you could pm me his ad, TheDetective, that would be great, thanks.

Yes, Flatbread, it's stripping back to brickwork and fitting brand new boarded ceiling. It's really hard, isn't it? You want to be able to trust people and this guy who's quoted seems trustworthy. I would rather pay a bit extra for good work and someone who is reliable and a tidy and considerate worker than one who is cheap who doesn't tile so well or doesn't give a good finish/cuts corners etc

JumpJockey: he is going to board over the old hole, and fit brand new ceiling anyway so those costs were built into the ceiling cost. So really just cutting hole in ceiling on landing and he reckons you can just get a kit which is a frame and hinged door quite cheaply.

I'm a bit worried about what is uncovered actually, like you discovered with your floor and hall ceiling, as our current bathroom is a total DIY botch job by the previous occupants. Fingers crossed it'll be ok...
