We built a conservatory style kitchen extension with a solid roof off the existing kitchen and each 'half' is about 3 by 3 meters. So not very big, and not that much wall space either.

I have tried to put a hand drawn version here

Would love you thoughts on our proposed layout

In area A, we will have an undercounter fridge and dishwasher. An oven above the dishwasher, with a counter above the fridge. We have a deep freezer in a utility room elsewhere, so should be ok with just an undercounter fridge (never really use it except to chill wine, anyway)

In area B, we plan to have a sink (so it would be next to the dishwasher, but divided by the thick wall) and a counter along the whole wall with a free standing double induction and a toaster and kettle

In the kitchen area around B, either we could have a small island or a small table and chairs for four or a counter on the west and a really small table for two against the south wall. The west and south wall are pretty much windows, but could slot a counter against the west wall as the wall part is high enough. Wwyd?

Area C would be cupboard/ deep larder with shelves

Area D would be shelves for plates, bakeware etc. I have loads of these!

Question, I do want a gas burner, so how do I mange that? This is in France, so need space for a cylinder too.

Also, space B is only 50 cm deep, so cannot fit standard size units. Should we just have a stone counter with open shelves below?

Any ideas, suggestions? Do we have too little counter space?

Also, we do have a dining room seating 8 comfortably next door, so it doesn't have to be a dining kitchen.

Thanks so much for your help.

your drawing would be clearer if done on graph paper with proposed cupboards space and it it showed where appliances were going etc....im finding it a bit hard to see whats what on your drawing....could just be me though!

Sorry Vicar I do have proper plans, but don't have them here at the moment.

possible alternative

B: sink and cooker (with oven under) as you suggest. medium size island unit to south with stools on side away from sink. (becuase there will not be much room for prep between sink and cooker.) Think about splashback for cooker - small false upstand?

A: fridge and dishwasher with counter above, kettle/toaster here, cups and coffee on shelves above.

C; plate and crockery storage nearer to DW and dining room.

D; food larder

I think this layout gives you more prep space and doesn't isolate the oven. else you are at risk of taking stuff out of oven and having nowhere to put it, because there are already plates piled up waiting for dishwasher on that tiny bit of counter.

Looks like a room with a lot of character and potential TBH.

Oh Fossil, I like your layout very much! Thanks. Your ideas would work so perfectly.

Now I just have to tell the electrician to change a couple of plugs, before he finishes the work!

The best views are on the south. Does it matter that the stools around the island look north? I guess not, because people will be sitting around to chat with the cook (me) rather than being unsociable and starting out of the windows Smile

Gosh, you make it so simple and I spent ages on it!

Our toaster is an (ahem) American dualit and I am loathe to part with it because it is canary yellow and cost a lot, even though it does pretty crap toast.

Now the thing is, I told the electrician to put the special american 110 plugs in the far northwest end of the counter in the extension. Is that a bad idea, and should I ask him to change? Or is it ok if the toaster is far away from the kettle?

I really like your idea of having the kettle and cups and saucers above the fridge and dishwasher. I can so imagine how convenient this layout would be.

I know it is crazy to be do so much for one stupid toaster (the cost of the two special american plugs is more than the toaster, now that I think of it). But I cannot help being penny wise and pound foolish on this Sad. It was my faithful companion in the US for 10 years and I cannot let it go (along with my American blender and tortilla maker)

Have sockets in both places - give yourself options! I like toaster near kettle, but not essential. 130cm is a decent run of counter, you should have space.

You could have stools on the west side of the island equally well.
