Do you think this would work? - and does anyone have an Ikea Dombas wardrobe?

My bedroom is seriously lacking storage.

I was thinking of starting afresh and getting rid of all our existing bedroom furniture and buying some new ikea stuff.

Anyhow, I'd have one wall free and I was thinking of putting two Ikea Dombas wardrobes along the wall with an Ikea Billy Bookcase inbetween.

On another empty, but shorter wall I would put another Dombas wardrobe.

I was thinking of then buying two malm bedside cabinets to tie in with the white furniture.

Now, the furniture is not exactly to my taste, but I was hoping it would provide me with decent storage at an OK price. I do like the PAX system, but I think it would cost over a grand to sort my bedroom out with it and as it's only myself and my husband who will see it I'm not sure about spending all that.

What do you think, would it be ok or too ugly?

What is your existing furniture like? I like ikea stuff but the stuff you have linked to does look very cheap and if you say it's not to your own taste then you will eventually hate it, i reckon.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2012 20:49

It's not to your taste. To me, that means do't do it - it isn't worth compromising as it will just make you think "I hate that" every time you see it.

My existing furniture - I've got 2 pine wardrobes (they are ok to look at, but not very good storage-wise) and two pine bedside cabinets. I've also got a pine chest of drawers. As an interim, two canvas type wardrobes also.

Storage is the main issue. I just want to look around and see clean lines instead of a mixture of stuff and ironing piles etc everywhere.

You could look on eBay or Gumtree for second hand Pax stuff and gradually build up to what you need. I don't think the wardrobe looks that great really, quite cheap. Or what about buying the wardrobe carcasses, drawers etc and make big curtains to draw in front - it's the doors that are expensive.

Pannacotta · 05/02/2012 22:36

If you get the plain matt white IKEA Pax doors (Ballstad) they are not expensive and they are fab storage-wise. I am planning to get a whole bank of them to store all our clothes and other stuff in (bed linen/towels etc).

I would consider doing without bookcases and chest of drawers and using pull out drawers/shelves inside the wardrobes instead. This looks sleeker than having a mix of furniture and costs about the same and you can store all sorts of things on/in them such as linen/ironing/laundry etc.

Pax matches the Malm range so you could still go for the white bedside tables.

Thanks all, I've had a re-think. You are all right, I would end up sorry. Just been looking on the PAX planner and a 300cm width wardrobe would be around £350 with the Bergsbo doors, so I guess it's not out of the question. I just remembered playing around before and it was a lot because I chose the expensive doors.

Does the MALM Drawers fit inside the PAX, has anyone done this?

I came to the conclusion that what I needed wasn't more storage, it was less "stuff" :)

paddingtonsdufflecoat · 06/02/2012 09:53

I guess I'm just having a bit of a panic - though I do need to declutter and sort through our clothes to get rid of some. We're having (hopefully) our 2nd baby in September, and know that the cot is going to have to be re-built and put in our room for the 6 months after the baby is born. I want to have some space to put the baby's clothes too before I eventually move my DD1 into the back bedroom with her own wardrobe etc.

I think I've decided on two wardrobes - one 4m one along one wall and one 1.5 -2m one depending on proper measurements. Think that will be around the £770 mark with delivery and rails and shelves inside. I guess once it's done, it's done, no point trying to scrimp and getting something we don't really like. Also cheaper than moving, I guess.

Yse the bergsbo and ballstad doors are reasonably cheap though the white of the malm is not a perfect match if your anal about shades. I have just ordered som this morning ballstad, bergsbo and malm - 500cm worth of wardys and 2 malm and it came to £400 ish delivered.

noyouhavehadawee · 06/02/2012 12:30

They do an add in storage rail for £4 which you clip on to the rail so you can have 2 rails for teeny tiny clothes to hang - i got a bt excited about that tbh Blush

paddingtonsdufflecoat · 06/02/2012 14:19

Thanks, that sounds good. Sounds like a lot of wardrobe for the price! What fittings did you choose for the inside?

sorry i totally told a lie lol - i got a 150 bergsbo wardy , the 50 cm bit has shelves and the 100 bit has a rail and shelf above and below and 2 of those wire basket drawers, then i got my ds a 100cm ballstad wardrobe with shelf at top and bottom and a extra hanging rod to attach and 2 of thosoe wire basets then 2 sets of malm drawers. 500cm for that price would have been better Grin

paddingtonsdufflecoat · 06/02/2012 14:30

Thanks, still pretty good though for two wardrobes.

I'll have to play around with the interior online. Think I'll have some of those double hanging rods, and a lot of shelves, plus some of the baskets. Hopefully it can solve our storage issues.

i was a bit miffed because i wanted to play online this morning but when it came to the online planner and adding in the extra fittigns inside it wouldnt open up full choice of stuff so i had to manually do some of my order based on a recent visit - all matches up though so im surei havent missed anything (Prays). I had to search on komplement instead within the site, we got the deeper wardys rather than the thinner ones too. The bergsbo doors do look nice i think and we saw them in the flesh too. DS already has the malm (4) drawers and they are really deep and sturdy- he has them skubb storage things in the drawers to seperate sox and pants and they work well - there about £6. The drawers are so spacious we even manage for him to keep his own bedding in them rather than stuffing up under my bed. Im too enthusiastic arent i Grin

paddingtonsdufflecoat · 06/02/2012 14:56

I'm glad you're enthusiastic! Makes me feel like I'm making a good choice. It's scary spending so much money on an item (or two) so want to make the best choice that I can.

Have played about a bit and hopefully will create a space in there to keep my Hoover and Ironing board out of the way too, as well perhaps putting a small TV in the wardrobe out of sight too (but not so sure about that one as have never had a tv in the bedroom before). Will have to do a proper measure up I think.
