reupholstering armchairs

we have 2 Parker Knoll armchairs that've seen better days. Asked a local company for a quote to re-cover (one of them also needs the arms re-padded) and was told around £400 each. One we bought in a Cornish junk shop, the other was picked up in a yard sale. An outlay of about £50 all up, I think. Should we bother or just head to Ikea???

Depends how much you love them, to be honest. Most Parker Knoll chairs I've seen aren't especially collectable - so if you're asking if you'd get a good price for them if you sold, I suspect not. If you love them, and want them restored to their former glory, and can afford it....then yes.

Reupholstering is expensive but I would still rather do this than head to Ikea if I really loved the shape of the chair. I did an upholstery workshop and it is not easy which is why it is so expensive. Nowadays when most furniture is made in China with machine stitched covers cheaper to buy new but you don't get the same quality.

This seems a bit expensive to me.
I recently paid £120 to have a similar chair re-upholstered in my own fabric. What is the breakdown of costs?
Upholsterers tell me that they are very quiet so you should be able to get a better price.
