Good kitchen sink for a slattern?

Pannacotta · 18/01/2012 17:54

Am planning a new kitchen and would like a sink which will disguise the fact I am a domestic slattern.

There are always dirty pans waiting to be washed next to our sink and clean post/pans piled up on the drainer (I won't mention the used tea bags and empty cat food tins...)

Would a double undermounted sink be worth getting? Are drainer cut outs easy to keep clean?

It would be nice to be able to have a sink big enough to wash baking trays/fridge shelves in, though I fear a white belfast sink is at odds with my housekeeping.

Any tips/recommendations please?

Ta

dirty roasting tins that is...

Our sink often gets clogged up - a phenomenon more widely experienced by slatterns ? ( matter ? Grin )

Anyway, my godmother (slightly posh) used to have an amazing facility in her sink that it could "digest" any amount of vegetable matter - basically everything got mashed up and went down the plug hole - I'd quite fancy a sink that could do that, to save on hassle Smile

... would love a new sink, and also a dishwasher, but no chance just now ...

< sigh >

amazonianwoman · 18/01/2012 23:33

Same friend has often been known to rush out and buy (expensive) new work suits just because her (plentiful) existing ones are dirty.

I do store mostly clean baking sheets/tins in my ovens Grin

Confessions of a slattern - I do quite frequently buy more socks for me, DH and the DCs. It's not just that the old ones are dirty, but one of them at least always seems to get lost. Anyone else have frequent visits from the sock monster ?!
With the DCs I can often convince myself that their feet have grown Blush

Pannacotta · 19/01/2012 09:32

Oh we have huge numbers of socks/pants as well just to I can do the washing less often...
I have no shame....

What kind of cupboards/units are you going for? I need to make a decision on our new kitchen and am torn between lovely painted classic Plain English type or modern handleless...

Don't plan on staying forever so thinking the latter might have more universal appeal? Decisions, decisions...

Pannacotta · 19/01/2012 11:23

Our house is old and bit quirky so will go for a Plain English look. We are all too untidy to carry off the modern handleless look, which I think can be a bit unforgiving in a family home, esp if one has slatternous tendencies....

Have fallen in love with this kitchen but they are nowhere near us
www.higham.co.uk/sydenhamkitchen.htm

but am aiming for a similar look.
Am considering Wickes/benchmarx with decent appliances/worktop to posh it up a bit.
How about you? I think it does depend on the style/age of the house not just what is fashionable.

Very nice, love it!

Our house is 1930s, big rooms, high ceilings, and we're all very slatternly and sock hording too Grin

Once I have a good layout

amazonianwoman · 19/01/2012 11:37

Oops, flipping iPhone.

Once I have a good layout planned out, I think I'll order from DIY kitchens Not flat pack, very good reviews (including on MN) and have looked at the door fronts locally. Excellent value, cheaper than any quote I've received so far and nicer too!

What do you think? You can pay extra to have them painted in your own colour choice too.

amazonianwoman · 19/01/2012 11:40

But then I like Kirstie Allsop's kitchen which mixes old and new well!

Pannacotta · 19/01/2012 11:42

Yes that looks good too, do you know what the carcass quality is like?

I might get a price from them too. WOuld you have the doors made for you then, dont you like the ones in your link?

OP posts:
amazonianwoman · 19/01/2012 12:23

Reviews say the carcasses are better than Howdens/Wickes/Magnet etc etc - do a search on Mumsnet for feedback. I do like the doors on the link, just thinking about a greenish-greyish eg F&B light blue sort of colour.

amazonianwoman · 19/01/2012 12:26

Oh see what you mean! No wouldn't get doors made locally, just had a look at the actual doors in a local showroom to check quality. The doors there and from DIY kitchens are made by Second Nature. DIY kitchens can spray/paint them any F&B colour you like Smile]

Dauphin · 19/01/2012 12:33

We got our carpenter to copy a Martin Moore kitchen which was great in last house but like you Pannacotta aiming for Plain English look alike in the new one (well, old cotswolds house, but new to us)....but it has to look unfitted, and 'evolved', and mix old and ultra new. I had a china sink before and it was a pain to keep clean so will go for stainless steel as a foil for the classic cabinets...possibly Franke.

Pannacotta · 19/01/2012 12:44

amazonian I was confused too, misread your post sorry.
Its great that they can colour match the paint. Do you know what colour you are going for? WHo wqill do the design for you?

Dauphin I like Martin Moore kithens too, this one in particular
www.martinmoore.com/page/88/New-Classic.htm and also this
www.martinmoore.com/page/90/English.htm

but DH told me no way were we having one of those.

I agree re the sink, I like the ceramic ones but too hard to keep clean.
This looks good for piling up pans (but am amazed by the price, not in a good way, that is!)...

Oh and dauphin do you have a P English catalogue for inspiration?
Some lovely pics on their website too...

OP posts:
Dauphin · 19/01/2012 13:00

Yes, do have the brochure...It's propped up in my rented kitchen at the moment.

The Blanco double sink is perfect looking in it's simplicity...but yes, v expensive.

Another kitchen co that's good looking but great pricing is this one

amazonianwoman · 19/01/2012 13:05

Oh yes love the kitchens in your links, I'd have either of their colours. Or any Plain English/Martin Moore kitchen colour in fact. Liking the sink too.

I've had a few local kitchen designers draw up plans, will pick the best and use their design to order from DIY. Naughty, but hey that's business! If they'd match DIY I'd gladly buy from them. I'm just really anal about what size cupboards etc they're recommending (and you should be able to work them out from a scaled drawing) so I can then calculate cost of comparable units online from DIY. Hoping they'll help me out with plinths/lighting etc when I contact them.

It's a lot more work to organise but DH is impressed at the potential saving. Which I'll spend on good worktops and a sparkly new range cooker Grin And maybe a sink like the one in your link!

Pannacotta · 19/01/2012 13:13

I may do the same if I can work out a good design - our kitchen is an awkward shape.
Any ideas re savings, compared to eg Wickes in-frame units? Did you find them via Mumsnet searching? I do recognise the name but havent seen them mentioned that much that I can recall (I spend far too much time on Property and DIY)!

Have looked at Neptune Dauphin but heard that the units are all made in CHina which really put me off. Not sure if its true though.

I love the kitchens here as well, which are kind of updated Plain ENglish, apparently the cabinet maker used to make musical instruments, but the prices also very £££

OP posts:
amazonianwoman · 19/01/2012 13:23

Ooo yes love the Neptune Suffolk and the Tim Moss ones too, I think we're looking for similar styles!

I'll have to hunt out my figures because we've now decided to totally rework our house layout and add an extension etc, will have a look. It was thousands cheaper than the local place recommended by a builder friend as being the most competitive around.

amazonianwoman · 19/01/2012 13:27

I think I read quite a few reviews on moneysavingexpert. From memory they're based somewhere around Pontefract which I could get to in about an hour, so I'll be making a visit in the next month or so. Will report back!

Pannacotta · 19/01/2012 13:28

Thanks, will do an archive search too and check out the price difference.

OP posts:
amazonianwoman · 21/01/2012 18:34

This looks tempting... Shouldn't cost the earth either, more £££ for granite, taps etc Grin

amazonianwoman · 21/01/2012 18:38

Aaarrgghh meant to link to the pale hand painted Tewksbury - see tab on original link.

Pannacotta · 21/01/2012 19:12

Thanks amazonian I have been watching the other thread and saw this kitchen, which does look good.
I'm a little hesitant about Howdens as, from what I gather, you cant go and see the kitchens and their pricing isnt at all transparent but will find out more.

Are you any further in reaching a decision?
