Looking at getting a new kitchen in the sales . I prefer the shaker wooden ones but this hour it needs to be modern, so we are looking at a cream gloss one .

Anyone got a gloss one , what are they like ?

Wooden worktops , what are they like ?

Anyone used Wickes ? What are they like ?.Seem expensive but the kitchen we were looking at was the Sofia one .Anyone got this one ?

They are expensive. Quality is ok. If they are fitting - can be a nightmare.

Do check out local independent kitchen shops especially if you have a quirky sized kitchen. They are often cheaper ( just keep saying you cannot afford it) and more flexible and have great ideas.

I have a gloss kitchen. It's brill. Very family friendly.

Not got wooden worktops as I am messy, it would be water stained and I'd never maintain it, oil it etc. Got quartz. It's wonderful.

Oh have a look at Wren kitchens too. They do a similar style to the one you like and they are reasonably priced and kitchen fitters I know say they are pretty ok quality (unlike Homebase).

Their fitting prices are a joke!! We were quoted £3.5k for just fitting. Shop around!! This was in their summer sale.

Pancakeflipper · 16/01/2012 21:25

£3.5K for fitting? Blimey. Our fitting was 3 days work at a cost of just under £800.00 and they were brill. In fact they are returning this week to finish a few bits off now it's all functioning ( for no cost).

Ridiculous wasn't it....and that didn't include any 'extra' electrical issues they might find! Our builder is doing tons of work to the kitchen, and fitting and costing a little over £1k. It is a bigish kitchen to be fair - but it's not £3.5k worth of fitting. Would love to know what daily rate they are on Shock They told me it would take 10days to fit also - absolute joke!

DH will be fitting . I couldn't believe the cost for fitting . Getting a quote from Magnet this weekend for a very similar kitchen.

make sure you get it in their half-price sale.

AFAIK they never sell anything at "list"

Hi. I think Magnet is very expensive. Howdens is supposed to be reasonable and great if you can get it at trade price. We have just ordered a kitchen through Wrens an so far so good. Amazing price. Good and bad reviews about all if you look on Internet. Our builder thinks Wrens are good quality but can be an Issue is if part missing and you have a fitter on standby, but not an issue if hubby doing it. Go for the ready assembled units, don't think wickes are.. Wrens, howdens and magnet are. Had a high gloss cream in last house, fab but edges were chipped within a year, guess that's why they no longer around. Good luck.

Wickes do their budget lines in flatpack, and the better ones rigid readymade. I have heard it said that they are manufactured by the same company that makes Howdens units. Howdens only sell to trade buyers, but will let householders into their local depots (they may not have a big shiny showroom, just a front room on the warehouse).

As bumf says, rigid is much much better than flatpack.

The wickes salesman was also happy to knock money off and round the figure down to a straight price eg it should be £12,345.67 but you can have it for £12,000. I found this crazy and just mistrusted the whole system. Constant sales too. There is no way in the world the kitchen was ever £24k. I wanted a more genuine cost and ended up with howdens.
