DEAD Fridge Freezer - worth calling a repair man?

Opened the fridge this morning to get milk for the tea - no lights. Aaaagh.
Everything still cold so recent.
Have checked the socket, checked the fuse

Seimens Fridge Freezer around 13 years old.
Worth calling out a repair man?
BEFORE I spend £400 on a new one?

My 12 year old Siemens died just before Christmas. I did think it didn't owe us anything. But it was intermittently freezing solid (in the fridge and freezer) then warming up, so I didn't think it was fixable.

i bought a new one. Sorry no advice about your particular problem. I thought about repair man but thought the charge would be a quarter of a new one and given it's age maybe not economical.

Is it definitely dead and not just needing a new light bulb?

If you can get someone who'll do a free or fairly cheap quote it might be worth getting them to look at it, but the chances are it'll be expensive to fix - parts are hard to get for older domestic fridges.

its dead all right - no compressor hum.
Time to go to Woolston and see what the wonderful Southern Domestics can deliver to us by tomorrow.

if the compressor is not working, and neither is the light, it sounds to me like an electrical fault in the supply. If it was just the motor or the thermostat, the light would still work. You say you have checked the fuse plug. Try it again in another socket. Examine the flex carefully (unplugged) to see if it has been damaged by rodents, puppies or by having a heavy appliance stood on it. Fit a NEW plug and fuse.

Hi Piglet

it was a moulded plug, no problems with the fuse, socket or wire
most probably a circuit board failure and repairing it would have cost an arm and a leg - luckily the insulation is still sound so we have everything sitting in it till tomorrow ; freezer still at -14 after over 12 hours

bought a new one today from the same shop
that will be delivered tomorrow

When a moulded plug goes wrong, you can cut it off and fit a new plug to the cable. Too late now.

true but DH checked the fuse - with a spare , and the sockets with other things and there was no evidence of plug failure
the cable does not touch the floor and we have cats not rats
