What would you go for? I imagine black will show up dust, but stainless steel will never look as good as new again?

Other appliances are black and/or stainless steel so looks wise makes no difference

I'm not the best housekeeper in the world......

I'd go for a built in one - you pull it out when you cook. Not keen on the massive extractor fans, they are not the prettiest of things.

brushed stainless (not mirror) is fairly easy to clean. Around a cooker the most important thing is to extract (not recirculate) as the vapour from cooking oil and fats oxidises into a hard varnish if you do not clean it away fast.

it is very very difficult to clean cooking film off wood, but easy off stainless.

A colleague of mine swears by baby oil on brushed stainless steel ...

I clean my Stainless Steel cooker hood with oil. Just a little on a paper towel gets off any stuck on fat. The filters go in the dishwasher too. It's no bother!

Thanks all - think we'll go for stainless steel. I think the dust may blend in better Grin and will get the baby oil out if need be!
