Where to buy cheap trade paint?

I'm going to need a lot of magnolia/white to cover the previous owners suspect taste in decoration before I put the final colour on top plus coverage for some new plaster. Can anyone recommend a source of cheap paint. We've used B&Q Trade in the past so cheaper than this if anyone knows of somewhere. We are in Scotland btw.

i realise this is an old post but , brand name paint of reasonable quality rarely get sold below a certain pre arranged price between manuf. and retailer most places you will find will be within a pound of one another,"Scewfix "are pretty good as an alternative to b&Q expect you know , cheap cheap paint = 3/4 coats every time .

some councils do cheap paint. Our local council told a friend of ours about them selling paint onto the public for a cheaper price

Perhyas its worth investigating

Wickes have a range of cheap paints in big plastic tubs. Some Matt Trade Paints (including Dulux Supermatt) are made to be applied to new plaster, and are porous to allow it to dry out, with no vinyl in them to suit this use. As they are specifically designed for that purpose, they are not hard wearing, or easy to clean without coming off.

You do of course realise that sell cheap=made cheap?

Sometimes you will find remnants of a good brand on clearance, but this is rare on popular or common colours. White paint is sold in vast quantities and is cheaper than colours for the same standard, so is useful for misting and initial coats on walls before you apply the finish colour.

Matt paint does not adhere well if applied to an old Silk coating, especially if it is at all dirty.

Dont buy B&Qs own trade brand. We made that mistake and it was like trying to paint with milk.

Wickes do a good trade range, but many professional painter and decorators use Leyland paints (there are many UK stores). Also, any large local builder depot/ merchant will also have decent cheap paint - I agree don't use DIY store cheap stuff it's not economical.

We used Wickes - it came in a massive tub. Recommended by our builder and DH said it was good.

Travis Perkins?

Like other posters I have experience of cheap paint and imho if you're trying to cover horrible colours, you need good quality paint that covers well or you'll have to use lots of coats.

I would always go for Dulux or Crown (haven't tried Wickes).

fossil97 · 25/02/2012 22:10

The word Trade on a tin does not mean it is good paint. It's such a false economy, you would be wishing you had spent another £10 when you are doing the third coat. Agree, stick with Dulux, Crown or something you've used before and are happy with.

I think B&Q are doing a good offer on Dulux Trade Matt in white at the moment, £35 for 10 litres.

PigletJohn · 25/02/2012 22:18

if it's Dulux Trade Supermatt, is is a porous paint specially designed for damp new plaster, and is very good for that purpose. It is not designed as a hard-wearing paint.

fossil97 · 25/02/2012 22:28

I would the think the OP would be OK as long as the plaster had dried out.

Yankeecandlequeen · 27/02/2012 15:44

I bought cheap B&Q to water down for new plaster - yet to use it.

Dad bought some cheap magnolia from a local builders merchant & they house stank of fumes after it. Be wary.

ZuzuBailey · 27/02/2012 19:31

I paid decorators to do my livingroom (lots of preparation work and papering or I would have done it myself) and their paint is very hardwearing and looks good, but it stank for at least three weeks.

I'll ask them to do work for me again but I'll definitely buy the paint for them to use.

Lizcat · 27/02/2012 19:47

I always use Brewers.
