Do you have dividing doors in your Victorian terraced house?

We are thinking about being able to divide up our "sitting room" - the typical through room in our Victorian terraced house so that we can have some space to ourselves if the DC and their friends are in the other half.

We need to be able make each half relatively private, but would have the room open most of the time.

I was also thinking maybe a very heavy lined curtain???

We don't as we don't have a double reception, but if we did I would choose doors over a curtain.

Friends put reclaimed double doors between their sitting and dining room and they were great, very flexible.

if you want to block sound, you need heavy solid doors that fit tightly into the frame.

As well as solid wooden doors, look at fire doors which are made of compressed chipboard and are heavy, they can be obtained in four and six panel versions which should tone well with your old house. Have a look at the Wickes site, which is good value for them. Magnet sometimes have them on offer.

As they are so heavy they need the proper hinges and careful fitting. Don't get the ones with a fake grain. They are available in various sizes.

six panel

four panel

indoor use only.

Thanks for the advice. Our problem is that there is not really much space for the doors to be left open on IYSWIM - We have built-in cupboards/radiator where the doors should fold flat. I was wondering if folding ones (like a concertina) might work. Or maybe they would just look ridiculous.

We had a pair of original double doors between the 2 receps in our Victorian house. Useful but a nightmare when fully open. My Dad We cut each one into two and altered the panels so it became 4 folding doors which were much easier to deal with. Tense moment when cutting original doors. I had to go out (wimp).

Bi-folding doors are probably your best bet.

look up Parliament hinges.

they enable a door to fold back against the wall.

I agree that bi-folding wooden doors are much more practical.
Not sure how easy it is to find them though,..
