has anyone had an electricity meter moved (very dull, sorry)

I understand from my electrician that this can only be done by the electricity supplier. Just curious to know if anyone has done this, whether it was a huge palaver, and if it cost a lot? Can't get any sense out of my electricity company. Moving our meter stands between me and a fabulous double fridge-freezer.

it has to be moved by the company that owns the pipes or cables. This is usually not the same company that you pay for your supply. Changing suppliers does not change the DNO.

But start by writing a very short letter (see my earlier posts).

The cost depends on the distribution company. I got my electricit meter moved 3 feet closer to the road (and towards main cable) and it cost about 1 thousand pounds!! (I got an entirely new gas supply fitted for less than this). The work can be divided into contestable and incontestable parts. You have to use your distribution company for the uncontrstable part, but might be able to do somethings yourself. There willl also be bits you have to do yourself - such as supplying an electrician, fit a fireproof mounting board, fit the red cable duct (which you have to ask for). You then might need the supply company to fit a new meter - often at no cost.
It is a complete PITA, involving many circular conversations with many different parts of many different organisations. It is perfectly doable if you have the tenacity of a very tenacious thing

We had to get ours moved a while back. Cost over £500. Palaver.

Having just moved into a smaller property we'd like to knock down the understairs wall and turn the stairs round which will give us a bigger lounge. Unfortunately the electric meter is sited on the wall which we want to knock down! We have a small cellar (small in height but is the full area of the house). The electric cable comes up from the cellar to the electric board, thus there is a long length of cable. Can an electrician move the whole electric board to the joining wall (approx 1ft)?

No, it has to be the network owner.

Old cables often have rusty steel armour, waxed paper insulation, and pitch-filled connectors. Any of these can crack or break when disturbed, and as the supply is effectively unfused, can have quite spectacular results, like a Roman Candle, while the cable burns away. You mention a cellar, which suggests an old installation.

The network cable jointers have special training, equipment, clothing, gloves and visors, and may cut the supply in the road.

Hi who do we contact to get a meter moved out side how much would it been

wormshuffled · 31/07/2014 16:33

I was quoted £750 quid by central networks who do it around here. They sent out a pack which showed me how to calculate the cost. One cost for disconnection one for reconnection then the amount of wire per metre, were very helpful actually...

timefliesby · 09/08/2014 22:08

It is a total rip off! And to Lula123, they are not supposed to but most electrician's will do this if it's just to an adjoining wall.
I've just been quoted £800 plus VAT to move mine. But I think some of the connection charge is contestable so I am looking into this as this is the majority of the cost £400...

PrimalLass · 10/08/2014 13:04

I'm moving mine less than a metre and have been quoted about £55 by eon.

lula123 · 12/08/2014 18:58

PrimalLass - is that for your electric meter to be moved? What part of the country do you live?

PrimalLass · 12/08/2014 20:55

Scotland. If you ask for a quote use the words 'under a metre' as it seems to make a difference.

Does anyone know if n power will move a gas meter so that workmen can do repairs to my wall and then put it back in the same place. Builders are telling me they can't finish the work as the gas meter is in the way.
