Converting living room into kitchen

We have a tiny kitchen and three large reception type rooms (I know, bad house layout already). Wondering if anyone has converted a living room to a kitchen and any tips / thoughts. We would have to start from the bottom up, ie, the current room we would like to turn into a kitchen has no gas pipes or water supply plumbed in (other than radiator) and no built in type furniture. Any idea how long this type of project might take? Thanks all.

We did this as part of other building works and it was really straightforward. We don't have mains gas so we had an LPG pipe routed to outside which took a couple of hours iirc, water pipes were re-routed under the floor and new electric sockets put in. It really didn't take long - each tradesperson only spent a few hours doing their bit. I guess you might need your drainage re-routing which could be a bit more complicated. Ours had already been done because of building work so this wasn't any extra hassle. We then converted our old kitchen to a utility room which didn't really require any work doing other than skimming the walls because everything was there already. Kitchen fitting took about 1 1/2 days I think (wasn't a complicated layout). Was definitely worth it, it's a lovely big kitchen-diner now which we enjoy spending time in!

the biggest job might be tapping into the drain for waste water (sink/washer etc), does the room have an exterior wall and do you know how far a mains drain is? can it tap into the existing drainage for current kitchen?

Thanks both. Daisy - is LPG very different for installation from normal gas? Sorry if that's a dumb question. Daenery - you're right, I think drainage will be the biggest job, but the room in question is sort of next to the existing kitchen (the don't share a wall, but do share a corner). It also has an external wall that goes out to where our bathroom drains out.

The tiny kitchen and three reception room scenario is very common in Parisian apartments, and increasingly people convert a reception room into an eat-in kitchen - there are architects and interior designers who are specialised in this and there may be books available which would give you ideas - I'll hunt around and post if I find one.

You might want to get a plumber round in the first instance to tell you what possibilities there are for routing water (clean and waste) and gas, if you want it. Once you know this, you can start sketching layouts - you can get a kitchen designer to do this, often for free.

No idea whether the installation is different I'm afraid! If your bathroom drains out nearby I would guess it should be relatively straightforward to connect to this drain. Good luck!

Bonaire, thank you, that's interesting. If you can find anything that might be helpful I would be most grateful
